CreativeBits Project 1: Avatars of the world

Guys and gals! Here is the deal. Because so many members showed interest in a community project I thought we should start with a relatively easy, but cool project. We're going to design avatars, like the ones below. Every participant should design one pixel dude or gal. More is better of course. Once we are done, we will create a huge tabloid and upload all into the CB forum profile avatar gallery for everyone to use.

Project: Avatars of the world.

Objective: To refect the personality, nationality, race and/or social culture you or your model belongs to.

Restriction: You need to work within the boundaries of the grid. At least one of the CB colors should be used, such as the orange: #cc6600, greys: #4E4E4E, #868686, #333333, #222222. This is to create some harmony between the designs.

Dowload: PSD file with guides.

Upload: Save your work as .gif and upload here. File name should be your username.

So, who is in?

This looks like fun. One question-- what's the purpose of the small size one?

good question! i forgot to explain.

bigger file called default_avatar.psd is 72x78px and it has guides every 6px. you can use this file and save it as .gif directly.

the smaller file called default_avatar_small.psd is 12x13px and can be used if you zoom in extremely, here every pixel is equivalent to one square in the previous file. if you're more comfortable working on this file you will need to enlarge it by 600% with the setting neighrest neighbour in PS, before exporting it as .gif. this file is just for convenience, some people prefer working on pixels in real size, but than it needs to be enlarged to have it same size as the others.

awesome idea, I'm in! Do you have any techniques or plugins filters or whatever that you use to create the pixel dudes or do u pretty much go dot to dot to dot?

i used PS straight, but the free Pixen application is specialized for pixel design.

are we limited to the "pixel design" or will a photorealistic avatar work as well?

wedgin: i had to look up what a mullet is.

Quote:

What is it anyways? To say that the mullet is a hairstyle barely even scratches the surface of the issue. The mullet is a way of life, it is a state of mind, it is every person who wears it. Physically it is characterized by short hair on the top, front, and sides of the head, followed by a long drape of hair on the back, reaching at least to the middle of the spine. Typical accessories to the mullet include moustaches, scraggly beards and/or goatees, and sunglasses. Research on the mullet phenomena, at this stage, is still in its infancy. However it is suggested by many top laboratories that the mullet, as it slowly reaches maturity, begins to grow tentacles into the brain of the victim. which affect several areas of the brain and fundamentally alter the candidate's actions and behavioural responses. Said behavioural changes mainly include extreme agression, the proclivity to consume large amounts of alcohol, pedophilia, lack of hygeine, dramatic reduction in inhibitions (often bolstered by the consumption of alcohol), sense of paranoia and distrust towards authority/governmental figures, and most importantly - steadily decreasing IQ levels. I would stress that these are only preliminary details however, and the controversial nature of the theory renders it unsuitable for mass publication.

But women can have Mullets too. Usually this describes a tendency toward "Rednecks" or other women. A Fem-Mullet usually involves spiking the hair on the top of the mullet while a Red-Mullet usually looks like a bad case of bed-head.

Ivan, In the USA, there is (or was) a TV show devoted to those who choose Mullets as a way of life. Those who watch it were also known to lose a few brain cells.

I think the best mullet resource around is http://www.mulletsgalore.com. This site catagorizes all the mullets under the sun. My favourites are the speed dealer mullet and the midgimullet. If you want a good laugh, check it out.
