Creativebits technical glitch
arvana (111 points) | Sat, 2006-03-04 04:12I'd like to change my avatar picture, but when I try to upload the new one from my 'edit account' tab, I get an error:
- File copy failed.
- Failed to upload the picture image; the avatars directory doesn't exist.
Can anyone on here have a look and see what's causing this?
Thanks!

You have to delete your current image before uploading the new one.
I don't know what is causing this to happen, seems like permissions, but they seem to be ok. Still working on it...
Thanks. I was scared to delete the old one in case I couldn't get a new one. Update coming up!

I had this problem a month or two ago... Ivan had to fix it manually for me (thanks again, Ivan!) I think there might actually be an issue with Drupal, because I too have been getting these sorts of errors (either directory not found errors or directory not editable, etc.) on Drupal installs that I manage. Why the error would only show up *now* is beyond me, though.
Sorry. That was my fear too. I bit the bullet and deleted/uploaded- it worked.
Try uploading an image with the EXACT same name and extension.
Hey, that worked, thanks -- I'm back!
So, to change your avatar:
Hope that helps someone else who runs into this issue.

Thanks arvana!
Looks like the folder on the server doesn't have the right permissions.

That's correct, but I tried every possible combination and none of it works correctly.
