Creatives Clothing. Need Your Advice!
Matt Davey (153 points) | Sat, 2006-09-16 12:49Hello, I am thinking of starting an online clothing company for creatives. Don't really have a name yet thinking of Designers Label or Creatives Clothing. What do you recon the clothes would be with slogans and such like related to the creative industry.
I think this is a gap in the market because every creative person i have met is fun and there are no such companies out there I am aware of.
I would like to know what you think of this idea...
Would you buy from this kind of shop?

i'm not sure what kind of stuff you're thinking of, but i will tell you this: i would not buy clothes that are like creative people's "inside jokes." like the stuff that veer makes. things like "Kern" and "baseline" — no one understands it, so it would just make me look like a stuck up geek if i wore it.
if your idea is not that, i'm always up for cool apparal.

This is really not my plan clothing like this:

Would you buy this kind of clothing? Its just marketed at creatives and may have a few quotes and things.

I love those tshirts above, sort of smart threadless style stuff.
Just please, if you do it, get big sizes and i'll buy lots ;)

just need a name
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
Names aren't easy to conjure up. You'll have to think what you want to evoke from the possible buyer. I suppose designers think different(ly) about such things, or at least deeper, so that's important. I'm not gonna give it a whirl, but I'm sure someone can think of something good.
So Far I Have Creative Clothing and emagine, the domain doesn't matter right now but in the future it will for now im going to have it as www.name.mattdaveydesign.com

Nice idea and I like the t-shirts.. Just like Jammo's request, I need something for my circumferences, hehe..
Names are really tough.. Subliminal indirect names are what I like the most..

Me and Jammo were chatting about leopard not being as it seams (me making the typo error as always) then it hit us Seams! The new venture is called seams.
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
Hello everyone thanks for your feedback the site is of course not ready yet but everyone bookmark www.seams.mattdaveydesign.com and there is a preview online now.
You can email if you wish to help. If you do help and design a t-shirt or something then you will get a share of the profits. At the moment it is just me running the whole show so please all the help I can get is very welcome.
Matt,
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
The name is pretty catchy, the only other names i could think of were: Stitches, Stitch, Stitch me up, you get the idea. Seams is working great. The holding page is pretty, i like the logo idea - thats purdy cool!
Big sizes will sell out man I tell you !!! just get my order of 5 shirts ready lol.

Goo

How much would you pay for a t-shirt like this?
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
I saw American Standard, keep that up (don't make a cheap shirt!).
For price, I find it hard to pay more than $25 for a shirt with shipping.
The shirts will be £13 or $25 with free shipping to most places.
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
Love the designs, very similar to Threadless. How are you manufacturing the tees? Are you doing the screen printing?
Can you make a Mac Daddy screen idea, I did it once for a company I was working for but wrong audience. Go after the Mac freaks, we love that stuff!
i might be able to give you some insight if you are new to the apparel industry.
Good Luck
Amuse Add me to msn or aim or mattdaveyichat. Yes Im very new to apparel I need all the advice I can get!!!
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
Good luck with this I think there are some great designs you have. Let us know when your production line is running... would certainly like to join the cue. Cheers
This is how it is going to work, the website is being coded now and this is how you buy your t-shirts sound ok?
1. You register your interest in buying the t-shirt on the website on a form not committing you to buying it but pretty darn close to. You enter details like Name, Paypal Email, Quantity and size.
2. Once enough people have registered their interest we buy a block of 25 t-shirts printed to the highest quality and on the best t-shirts around.
3. We send money requests to the people who have registered their interest and set the store to show we have stock and change the show your interest to a paypal buy button.
4. As soon as people start sending the £13 per t-shirt we start sending them.
5 T-shirt Arrives Everyones happy.
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
Just a wonder?
Can't you transfer money from your VISA to your paypal?
I suppose we could make a paypal cart but i am not an expert at this sort of thing.
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
i would call it something like canvaswear or creagear.
Paypal isn't enough. Many ppl can't have a paypal account, because paypal didn't bother to extend their network beyond the 20 something developed countries.
I would love to have clothes that have special pockets or other features that work for creatives only.
What sort of shopping cart software would you reccommend?
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
How about a paypal cart that can take cards? Im just stuck with the ease of it.
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
Ivan, I have chosen Agora Cart so we will try to take everykind of payment.

People will design a t-shirt for a prize of 50 pounds at most? Doesn't sound fair enough...
-Lea
Because Im not making a profit at all to start with because I am buying stock very kind people like jammo have been designing for free. Of course I will pay them when I have profit but £50 at the moment is all going to buying stock.
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
Then excuse me, I thought the 50 pounds was all they would ever get.
I also like them. Please add some for women! :)
-Lea
I would buy that stuff. I like them.
Josef Stapel
I haven't yet added any girls stuff so leaverou i give you first choice as to what sort of thing you would like.
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
I didin't mean girly designs (if there is such a term), I was referring to the t-shirt "shape" (excuse my english). Women most times don't like loose t-shirts like men do, they prefer something more flattering ;)
Take a look at other sites such as the one mentioned earlier on this thread, and you will see they include other t-shirt styles made for women. :)
-Lea
I Now have girl sizes medium and Large and Male Sizes small, medium, large, xtra large t-shirts are $25 and creativebits users can have first orders on this range that we are selling. just email with your t-shirt name, quantity, size and payment method (just name one and i'll see what i can do). And please leave you name and cb username as well please if i get enough orders from cb users now then i will do future offers. The store is not open yet just a creative bits thing.
The current range is....

Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
the idea is to offer flexibility regarding the payment.
some people preffer paypal, while others something else.
and indeed, paypal takes quite a bunch of people out of the equation.
take a look at moneybookers too.
i dont think that making people wait for the t-shirts until
you get to order a bunch is working.
you will get mixed reviews.
some of them will complain that they waited too long, while others will say the package arrived shortly. it all depends on the demand.
i think you should take your chances and pre-order 25 pieces for each model and size and just see how they sell.
also, 100%cotton is just not enough information.
the weight of the cotton is important here.
a weight of around 100g/sqm for example is a thinny tshirt, while something thats over 200g tends to be more resistant and warmy.
its bad to have good designs on crappy cotton.
sizes like M, S, XL, XXL differ quite a bit between different companies.
make sure you measure the tshirts in cm or in too.
and say something like our M size is 35cm wide and 60cm height with a sleeve opening of 15cm. this way ppl should be able to measure their tshirts home and compare it to the website and just imagine how close would that be to that they currently have.
also, western ppl are used to money back guarantees.
see how that fits the equation.

I really do need all the help I can get and here are the answers to your 2 pennies.
1. The shirts are printed on american apparel so the quality is excellant as will be stated on the website.
2 Pre ordering hoping that people will buy is for people with lots of money unfortunatly this is not me I am a student and this is a side project, the orders will be dispached as soon as I can get them myself but i cannot do it any other way until people buy the first lot.(It will not always be like this)
3. Payment will be credit cards, debit cards, paypal and also you can mail us a money order and stuff.
4. Money Back guarantees, humm will think about it but it will depend on paypal and things once they take their share then we loose out if people dont want it.
Hope this help and if you wanna give more than 2 pennies come be a member of the team!
Matt Davey - Graphic and Web Design www.mdfolio.co.uk
I think it's a great idea. The shirts are nice, but like someone else said, we need some figure flattering shirts for the gals. :)
$25 with free shipping? I would probably buy one if I liked one enough. I want a long sleeve shirt though. :)
Your designs are great, and you have chutzpah! No small business loan for this guy. He goes directly to the people! It is so sweet and trusting...I think I will order a shirt from you.
But pokie and Leaverou are right about women's sizes. Although American Apparel shirts fit tighter than some other brands, there is an appreciable difference between men's and women's fit.
I like the name, but it needs something. Creative spelling? "Seems"? "Seamz", maybe? How about "Dream Seams"? I just googled "Seams" and came up with these links:
SEAMS - a transmedia project that focuses on clothing as a vehicle to comment on the garment industry. www.seams.la
SEAMS - the National Association for the Sewn Products Industry. www.seams.org
SEAMS - The Society for Electro Acoustic Music in Sweden. www.seams.nu
Ummm...on second thought, don't spell it "Seamz", I just googled that spelling, and let's just say that the sites that came up were....interesting.
You know what? "Seams" is good.
Back up my hard drive? How do I get my computer into reverse?
Hey.. really like those designs. Very cool altogether.
One problem though, when I visit the site all I get is:
"Index of /"
with no files listed.
I checked your main domain and that came up fine, but the sub-domain was a no-go. Maybe you're aware of this, but just thought I'd let you know in case you weren't.
Good luck with it - looking forward to seeing the site!
Alex
