i have to overlook a credit card design here, and wondering if anyone could direct to some resources on the net where i could check out latest design trends and such ... being completely plastic-free myself i haven't quite followed the trends lately ...

Pocahontas is out, Nemo is in nowadays. :) Just kidding. Unfortunately I don't know any resource you're looking for, but I think you can do anything that fits your clients identity and message. So, for inspiration you may want to look at environmental designs. Stuff that doesn't carry a specific message, like a press ad or a business card, but is only created for a general ambiance. Interior designs, wallpapers, etc.

Have you seen american express' transparent/blue card? Very cool!
Not the best picture of it found here:

Think high tech, shiny, blue for stability and dependability. Hope this helps!

Indeed, American Express has a pretty nice design... where as Bank of America's is pretty cheap looking (actually it's their Check Card that's poopy looking, their Credit Card is alright, reminds me of Apple's default OS X desktops, a fine look ;P ). The Platinum Check Card: http://www.bankofamerica.com/deposits/checksave/images/platinum_checkcard.jpg (if you have photo id on the card the feathering they use is horrid, at least for the design used when I got one), and the Platinum credit card: http://www.bankofamerica.com/creditcards/images/cc_visa_plat_header.jpg

Why follow a design trend? A trend today will probably be the next "photoshop drop shadow/bevel" of tommorow. Why not create something that makes sense for the client and the clients customers.

Some reflective sliver elements on the card makes it look hi-tech like. Areas of translucency also looks kinda hot. Have seen cards that use both together, look quite bling.

If it's an envro company go brown, tan, green, natural orange, red etc. (Not ALL of those just one - three) Credit Cards are always the same... stand out! be diffrent! Please.

The clear cards are really cool... there's a neat delta sky miles one like that too... the problem with clear is: DIRT! They get pretty grimey and nasty after a while, with the black lines on them from going through the readers...

anyway, that's my .02 (not including processing fee)

learning/studying latest design trends does not necesserily mean to copy them and blindfold follow them ...
being different for sake of being different also doesn't mean much to me - we are trying to design a credit card here, not to prove anybody what cool artists we are ...

Translucent is definitely in these days.

It's all just 1's and 0's
