Cycling jersey design comps
gnasm (236 points) | Tue, 2010-02-02 05:59Jersey design for a local, ladies-only bicycling club. Original sketches done by hand, comps done in Photoshop/Illustrator, finals to be finished vector graphics. Jersey template direct from clothing company.
The logo and "mascot" were done by a previous designer, so I can't take credit for their creation, just their arrangement.
This is a non-competitive club of just over 100 members in the greater Milwaukee area. While they're a very inclusive group with a range of different types of women, their membership skews toward young professionals with decent jobs, easily covered tattoos, and large record collections. Their focus is on supporting and encouraging each other while having fun; you don't need to be an elite cyclist or have an expensive bike to have fun.
This is going to be 2010's official jersey for dues-paying members. Aesthetic should represent the bright, fun, slightly punk rock vibe of the club. Must integrate logo and "mascot" into design. Ideally using blue/yellow/"red purple-ish" color scheme. Sponsor logos to go on back.
So... three designs, three different approaches. I'm looking for critiques on the overall aesthetics; these are just rough comps and the finals will be polished and crisp. Notes were for the client.
Whaddaya guys think?

I prefer BIG SKULL or SKULLGYLE.
the BIG BELLA will strecht the character and sponsor's logo became confusing.
yes I'm brazilian xD
Nice work on the comps.
Of the three, I prefer the "Big Skull". It's clean, simple and stylish. I like how you've filled the space with the skull and the girly touch of magenta down the sides and trim on the arms works.
I'm not keen on the cartoon cyclist but realize you have to use it. My suggestion would be to downplay it...treat it more along the lines of an insignia on a polo shirt in a one colour screen:

The Big Bella is washed out and I'm not a fan of argyle...too old man socks for my taste.
Overall, great work.

Agree with mama (except on the argyle angle) - the big skull will work best. Also agree the chick biker cartoon is the weakest aspect of this entire exercise - looks very junior high school art class to me. I wouldn't mind seeing the argyle front (sans the logo) with the big skull back and the chick biker on one arm with the Bella Donnas logo on the other arm.
But I also think you should spend some time on this. It's a nice project - do something you'll like long term.
You're probably right about the argyle...I've been biased by a Mr. Burns' look-a-like who only wore baby blue argyle for golfing and was spotted one night sinking his own with some woman on the 5th green.
Shed a whole new light on a hole-in-one.

Golf courses can be very romantic.
Thanks everyone. Client liked "Skullgyle" best, though she was intrigued by "Big Skull." The "Big Bella" was really just a design to satisfy some of her requirements. I gave her something safe, but I'm glad she doesn't want to play it that way.
This isn't due until the end of the month, and I've got a few more ideas to test out, as well some revisions to make on the designs above. I'm having a lot of fun with this one!
