Dawn Design and Graphics Logo

It was mentioned that I try to use the name Dawn for my freelancing instead of Dawning Concepts. Here are a few logo ideas I've been working on. Any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you.

I like the last one. Try to challenge yourself and see if you can come up with a logo that doesn't show sun or horizon at all. That would be cool.

Haha. That's what I did with my last one and they all said to try one that showed "dawn" some how :)

1. Looks like Obama's logo.

2. That bird is pointless. It'll get lost when shrunk down therefore useless. It's also dreadfully ugly.

3. The third one is nice, and leads me to believe Ivan is right, you should steer clear of sunrises/sunsets/sunny days/wildlife sceneries

4. Very obvious, a no brainer, concept is very obvious.

Also: The word Graphics makes me cringe.

have to agree with leaky on the word "graphics."

design "and" graphics? aren't graphics part of design?

at least it wasn't "graphics artist" or "graphics designer," which both irritate the hell out of me (just a pet peeve there).

seriously, though, what's the name of the company? is it just "Dawn?" or is it "Dawn Design & Graphics?" not really sure, either from your description or the logo itself. i would leave the word "graphics" (or "graphic") out of either. just "design."

The last one is a winner, Heather. Go with it and don't look back.

EDIT: Okay, let me address the obviousness of the sunrise motif. The first three are too obvious. I agree that the bird is pointless, unless you're a surf shop, and even then. But the last one is merely suggestive of the dawn idea. It's very abstract and doesn't seem to mimic anything else I've seen. The word "graphics" may annoy a lot of us, and long before your time here at CreativeBits we've talked the term to death, but I can see that it might be helpful if you want to be sure people know what services you offer. But I wouldn't use both. Even though "Dawn Design" is nicely alliterative, I'd just use "graphics." Dawn Design could be interior decor. Really, I think you've got a good logo here. Not wild about aqua and gray, but please avoid the temptation to color it up too much, or with colors too routinely associated with dawn.

I don't think "design" is too generic. it's very traditional in our field. chances are your logo won't be in a vacuum. and quite often people leave out any reference to design or graphics in their company name.

i do think "graphics" is too literal and too limiting. graphics to me implies a subset of design. sounds like charts and graphs, like you work in powerpoint or something.

personally, it comes across a little less professional to me, as well. but that may just be me.

Say "graphics" and people think clip art, sparkly animated .gifs and 14$ logos.

i think that sums up my thoughts, too.

while my company calls me a graphic designer, my freelance work is as a "communication" designer. i don't design graphics, i design communication and i may use a graphic here or there to help me accomplish that.

This is a perennial problem in our field, isn't it? My own company name it the name of my town/city plus the word "graphics." No one seems to have trouble figuring out what I do, but that might just be dumb luck -- and who knows what business I'm turning away because people think it means I do glittery clip art! Ugh!

Lately, I find that "communications" seems to have started meaning technical phones and wireless stuff to many people as opposed to the speaking/writing aspect it once held. I was once an oil company's Communications Manager. Now, that title would go to the guy in the basement with the multicolored wires sticking out of the wall, and the canvas tool belt slung around his hips. You see this reflected in newspaper employment classifieds, too. In my area, "communications" seems to be related to cell phone towers and satellite dishes.

Once upon a time, we used the term "commercial art." That had its drawbacks, too, but it seemed pretty straightforward. I wonder sometimes if we shouldn't go back to that.

Heather, I'm sorry for hijacking your critique for these thoughts! They are sort of related, though. Thinking about what Greg has said here, Maybe Dawn Design is the best way to go.

No... never go back to "commercial art" - I hate that term. Advertising design, graphic arts (my first tagline), graphic design... there are so many better terms. "Commercial art" and "desktop publishing" belong in the dustbin of history.

I certainly agree with you about "desktop publishing," but "advertising design" doesn't do it for me; only maybe 25% of what I do could be termed advertising. That might be misleading. But you know, if we want to bat this idea around some more, probably we should do it in the Forum. I feel like I've hijacked Heather's critique.

The hammer of the gods can be found in version 4. Spend some time with it. Study the letter forms. Pure genius awaits - you merely have to extract it.

Concerning the other discussion - another suggestion might be swapping the positions... Instead of "Dawn Design & Graphics" (which sounds like two separate fields to me)... you could go with "Dawn Graphic Design". Just a thought.

My company name is "(My Name) Design" to which my Dad always adds an "s" at the end... "(My Name) Designs" - like there's a bunch of designs sitting on a shelf somewhere and I go get one when a client needs something. :-)

I don't mind the last one presented either but I'd lose the gradient. I'd also try replacing the letter "W" with the mark, or a few more alternate sizes and placements of (ie. larger and coming from behind the entire word).

Good luck...never easy designing for yourself.
