Design studios/firms in New York

wahit's picture

Hi!

I'm going to New York on a trip real soon, and I thought it would be a great idea to deliver some portfolios myself on some industrial studios/design firms. Yes, I come from Europe... it's going to be a big trip.

The thing is, I'm not much of a connoisseur of New York design studios, so I'm asking your for your help.

Can you give me some names of industrial design firms, that mainly work with furniture, lighting design, and/or companies that like to develop conceptual design?

Thank you VERY much for the help!

Cheers,

Nuno

Okay, let me tell you two

Two things:

First, make sure you make appointments with these firms before you waste your trip. The busy ones (the ones you want to work for) may not see you without an appointment! If you don't have a 'Leave Behind' item (disposable portfolio in brochure format or some other keepsake) then you have to leave your portfolio at the first place you visit for a day or two. That kills the rest of your options.

Second, if you haven't done your research already, you're already wasting your time taking this trip. Do your homework. Pick up any industrial design magazine and look at the ads for all the New York firms. Or go to dwell.com. They seem to have a lot of references in there.

Remember, luck without preparedness means you're not ready.

Hey natobasso, I'm going to

Hey natobasso, I'm going to New York on vacations, and I thought it would be a good idea to deliver some portfolios in hand, or perhaps sending them through mail some weeks before, and maybe get some interviews when I arrive there.

I'm currently finishing my portfolio, and I have already decided which studios interest me. I'm going to send some stuff to Milan, Paris, London, Amsterdam and Tokyo. New York is just the 6th city I'm interested in.

And yes, I don't really know any industrial design firm in New York. As an european, american design is not that well accepted here, since we have top-notch studios here. Of course there is great US industrial design, but... Europe is Europe ;)

I just thought it would be a great opportunity to circle the World a bit. I want to work here and there, in different countries with different cultures, before I start my own design studio. I have a lot to learn.

Thanks for the input!

Cheers!

On all your points I

On all your points I couldn't agree more (except for american design not being accepted in Europe; this attitude seems a bit provincial, no?!) just remember to schedule some appointments first. You won't be sorry you did the ground work and preparation. You'll have a better trip, professionally speaking.

Yeah, but I just wish if

Yeah, but I just wish if someone here could help me with some design studios or firms. In Europe there are a bunch... you think of a top-notch designer, and you're sure most of them are somewhere between France, Italy, Holland or Spain.

This might seem stupid, but I'm not even remembering any american industrial designer :O (alive!) ;)

No, not a furniture site per se. Keep reading a little deeper; they cover all things architectural from interior design to building practices.

I subscribe to Dwell...

And yes, it's mainly modern architecture and green design/architecture, interior design, etc. But no, it's not just for furniture. Every now and then, they cover some industrial design, as well. But it's not like Metropolis where they encompass all aspects of design, their main purpose is MODERN.
