Desktop Logo Branding
kenyabob (303 points) | Thu, 2005-06-16 19:37I just redesigned my website, and one of the features I would like to include is desktops. However I have a few questions about how to tackle this wallpaper offering aspect. First, what sizes should I offer? I have people coming in to the site using all different resolutions. Also, some friends have widescreens. So, should I just offer the biggest standard size and biggest widescreen size?
Also, although I used to hate them, I want to put my logo on the desktop somwhere. But where should the small watermark go so that it is visible on both macs and window machines?
Good question. You just make custom desktops for every res and put it in the corner. Or display it in the middle. Though noones willing to display it. Duno.
1024x768
1600x1200
1920x1200
All other sizes can be scaled nicely from those.
As far as adding your logo... one sure way to piss people off is to ruin a great desktop image with some silly-ass logo that nobody cares about. You SHOULD mark the work as yours, but do so in the most unobtrusive manner possible. A 12-point line of text in the top 22 pixels or bottom 22 pixels (for Windows) is acceptable. It's there, but hidden by the menu bar when used.
Of course if the logo IS the focal point, then you're ok.

No big logos please.
i think this is a nice example of subtle logo placement; either the 'a' in the upper-right corner or the info in the bottom-left corner should be enough in my humble opinion :-)

That's exactly what I'm not talking about! Why would you want to display a copyright notice on your desktop. If they would have moved that line of type to be at the very bottom or very top, I would use it.

It's a solid bg... you could easily remove the entire branding... or move it. ;c)
I think that if you actually want someone to download it you've got to hide your logo etc.
