Digital Asset Management
StevePerry (33 pencils) | Tue, 2006-06-13 20:52As creative professionals, we find ourselves gathering more and more digital assets each and every day. Recently I have been thinking about changing the way I store these files on my Mac. This is not because I have lost any files nor have I really got a major problem with space but I just think that it's time to work a little smarter in this area.
Our lives are being made a bit easier with software like Adobe's Bridge coupled with Version Cue for example and smaller apps like Jumsoft's Process. This does make my workflow more streamlined but it does become a bit messy when I start using Dreamweaver or Quark Xpress - as these don't work with Bridge and Version Cue.
How do you work? How do you save versions of your files? How do you keep track of these files etc., and back them up? I think it would be interesting to find out how other people work with this important, and usually overlooked, issue.
I usually create a client folder, then within that client folder I would create for example a Photoshop Files folder, and Illustrator Files folder, a Quark/InDesign Files folder etc., etc., but apps like Bridge are forcing me to change my ways, plus if a logo is shared across two clients (an ISO logo maybe) I end up duplicating them. This has served me well for over 8 years now but I'm wondering if there is a better way of working.
Any thoughts or examples of other workflows would be interesting to see.
