Discover Chefs

Discover Chefs

Hi all,

I am working on a new site discover chefs. Here are some logos. Any thoughts? My developer and one other person I know like #2.

Thanks,
Merms

font of the second one (bring the CHEFS closer to the DISCOVER and maybe make it bold)
colors of the first one or the third one.
as for the logo, i think i'd make the chefs hat bigger ( i love the style it has to it!!)
get rid of the circle around it and use the arrows from the second to last one, then rotate them so they're kinda in a perspective. the N-W-E-S should be the same font as the "DiscoverChefs"

all in all, i like the fact that you've shown multiple styles of everything and colors.. it'll help you ALOT in getting feedback.. nice work!

the first thing i would do to make it simple is get rid of the N E W S bcos the four arrows already says directions and discover dont have to over say it.

In general:
i like the 4th logo and colors but increase the size of the hat and remove NEWS
Font Style i would go for the 3rd logo but no space between discover and chefs

What are the horizontal lines for? I don't see their purpose here. It looks like you have three separate logos, you should choose one image to go with your text, or just the text.

I like the compass idea, but it needs work with what's in the middle - in a classic compass diagram North always has a larger arrow or letter, so why not replace that arrow with the chef's hat somehow? It could still occupy the center but have the large top covering where the N would be. Something to play with anyway.

I certainly agree that the N S E W letters are unnecessary, and you may want to consider slanting the whole thing to the left to give it some dynamism (like the NewsQuest logo ;), perhaps keeping the chef's hat upright, I don't know if this would work or not, I'm just throwing in ideas.

What exactly is the site about? I kinda like the 3rd text if it's like a competition or something, but for a more permanent and official looking thing I'd go with a non-italic font more like the 4th or 5th.

Just a thought about colour - I would look at some popular chef's dishes for ideas there, or include a check pattern (from their uniform).

i'm gonna go out on a limb, only cause i've done this before, but i'm pretty sure those bars on the side are just color swatches. might have been able to move them over some more, or put a bar to seperate it to make it clearer.

Nice job. Just a little more work and you'll get there.

I like the 2th logo, colors and font. But you may reduce the space between discover and chefs and put a little bold. Remove the NEWS. They're unnecessary.

Just one more thing. Try to use the circle around the hat like the last one... You'll get a more clean logo. You may move the logo closer to the type...

That's it.

Hey, i like the direction - and mortimer, im almost sure the hor lines are color refs for the logo in the pres card. ;) If you are sticking with web only, i like #2. Its round and soft and looks inviting. I dislike the compas logo altogether. I think the word 'discover' is being interpreted too literally in that nav logo. When you find a really good chef, you are discovering how great the food is. You wont find a great chef cooking on a bbq in the grand canyan so to speak. ;)

when you go print, maybe stick with an icon (depending on ad budgets) that portrays your #2 logo somehow (w/o the text even try)..

Think about the greatest food you have ever had besides grandmas house =P. Do you remember the restaurant, or do you remember what you had to eat? I think the philosphy breifly applies to the graph asset(s) here.

all the best! --mike

I'll vote compass #1 with the colour scheme from #1 and wordmark from #3. I agree with losing the NEWS, and think the compass could be tweaked. I would like to see a larger red inner circle, with the chefs hat in white reversed out of it.

I agree with previous comments about the type and simplifying the layout a little. I like the use of color to separate the type in v.2, but I agree the word spacing could be a little tighter. I think the triangle shapes alone in v.1 say compass, without needing the "n, s, e, w" elements. They definitely add to the "busy" look. I would just go with the hat in the circle with the arrows. And look at nailing down a b/w version that works really well before throwing in some color - it usually helps define the logo visually when you're only working the the shapes of all the elements and not worrying about balancing colors, etc. I think picking two colors from the top scheme (gray/red) would do more justice to the logo than some of the other color combos - and I think squeezing in four individual colors is just too much for this simple logo. I also like the idea of playing with reversing the hat out of the circle. It's a great start - keep at it.

I'm in favor with #2 also. You might want to consider rotating the compass a bit to make the mark a little more dynamic too. Color-wise, I like #3 better.

But not knowing much about the final application of the finished mark (online, print, billboards?) or the company's goals, my comments are just an opinion and may not lead to the best solution for your client.

Well, I love the feedback. Some more background, on the site. It is starting off as a site where any chef can post a profile. The direction will move towards a photo/mashup for them to be discovered and showcase their work etc...

This said, hopefully the current logo still seems appropriate. It may be a little literal, but I am ok with this. Based on your suggestions and others, #1 and # 2 will be used for round 2. Three colors from these two seem to be the best.

Also, what do thing of the overall website idea. This is not for a client. It is my site and it will be used for web and eventually print. It will be considered a Web 2.0 site, but by no means be promoted this way because to chefs and the avg. person web 2.0 this means nothing.

Thanks,
Dave
FYI - This is the 1st public revealing of what the site will be all about.

The idea of a compass is over done for discovery. There has to be other options, something less cliché. And something less complex.
