Disk Utility Error!

Hello, I have tryed to burn something onto a blank DVD-R twice now, using my external firewire DVD burner. The burning starts, then suddenly an error pops up that sais: The device drained its buffer without burn underrun protection. I have an idea of what that means but I would like to know how I could fix that... I have no clue what to do, thanks.

Did you try Toast or the built in Finder burner?

Toast is great but cost too much for most users.

I use BurnX Free at home and it works well.

No, I have both of those burning programs you guys are refering to. But what I am doing, I need to use Disk Utility for, does anyone know how to fix this?

The buffer underruns happen when the flow of data from its source (hard disk, CD-ROM drive, network, etc.) to the recorder is not as fast as the selected recording speed. When you encounter a buffer underrun problem, you have many solutions:

- first, restart your Mac to have a "clean" machine
- don't use too many other applications when burning a disc
- try using a a lower burn speed
- try a completely different type of writable media
- in some cases, installing more RAM or a faster hard drive can help

My computer does not need more RAM, and I tried every other thing you said. None of them seemed to work... I got this external dvd burner just last week and i cant even burn certain stuff with disk utility without this error poping up... does anyone else know how I can fix this? Oh yeah, and you can't change the burn speed in disk utility.

You said that you have Toast. With Toast you can change the burning speed and Toast has an option in its preferences to prevent buffer underruns. So, why not use Toast? What are you trying to burn that absolutely requires Disk Utility? Toast is more complete than Disk Utility.

And have you really tried to use a completely different type of writable media? On my G5 Dual, I systematically receive errors with some brands where other burn perfectly.

I'm making a backup disk of 10.4 Tiger and burning backup Xbox games, and for that I need the burner from Disk Utility. Toast sucks for this kind of stuff.

Perhaps that Toast sucks but, currently, it's your Disk Utility or your burner that sucks.

I made my own backup of the Tiger DVD with Toast, used the backup to install system on some computers and did not encountered any problem.

If you absolutely want to use Disk Utility first, why not make a disk image with Disk Utility and then burn the image with Toast?

Hey, Ozskry. You suggested "try using a lower burn speed". I notice many Mac experts suggest this for burning with Disk Utility. Maybe I'm just not seeing it, but where do you change the burn speed in Disk Utility?
