Domains and Webspace

In a few weeks time, I wish to purchase a domain or two and some webspace. I've been looking at Dreamhost and so far, it looks like the one I'll be going for. However, I was wondering since I'm in the UK, I'll be better off getting webspace off some UK hosting company? What do you guys think? Any recommendations?

Another bugging question I have is I want two domains. (Different names.) Is it possible for me to share the webspace I purchase? Idea has it, I want a seperate domain for my website, and another one for a blog. Is it possible for me to buy two domains and use the same web[hosting] space? How would I go about doing it?

For the blog, I'll be using WordPress by the way.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, it's possible to host two or more domains on one hosting space. Dreamhost registers the first one for you free. You can add up to 5 with them. They will appear in your ftp as separate folders simply. DreamHost will let you install WordPress with a click of a button.

I don't think it matters where is your hosting located. I heard good things about ipowerweb. If you have money to burn you may consider mediatemple too.

dreamhost shows plans with 3, 7, 15, and 31 full domains with their shared plans.

I have been contemplating hosting sites for a few clients with their minimum plans. they wouldn't get too much traffic so there shouldn't be any problems right?

cb has been hosted on a minimum plan and we're hitting 5K+ page loads daily, so a lower traffic site should definitely have no problems.

Well it's based in Dublin, not in the UK but I use the business plan with www.Hosting365.ie. Good phone support and at least there in the same GMT timezone. Used to host two domains from the space myself so no issues there.

Looks like it'll be Dreamhost after all. I'm a little confused on this bit when it comes to buying. Can someone explain to me what each is. Please? I've never done this before and don't want to go wrong.

1 Month for $59.90 - $9.95 per month ($49.95 setup fee)
12 Months for $119.40 - $9.95 per month ($0 setup fee)
24 Months for 190.80 - $7.95 per month ($0 setup fee)

There is always the option of selecting 12 months hosting then entering "777" as your promo code. ;)

I think I got it now. But yeah, what will this promo code do for me? How much cheaper? :p

$0.77USD a month vs $9.95USD for 12 months. Still no setup fee.

That much cheaper :).

score! thanks for that I just signed up...that makes charging clients much easier, nobody tell them.

Ivan's picture

This is unbelivable. What's the catch?

It was meant for a 7 year promo thing. For the first 777 orders only. Not sure if they haven't reached that number or failed to disable the coupon code.

I was a bit skeptical till it went through on the credit card but I just looked at my statement and it was just as they said, under $10 for the year, cool.

Okay, let me get this straight, (as I highjack this thread) you can host two different URLs on one server? We are hosting our website on our QS G4, so, can we just make two folders in our server folder and have godaddy.com (the place that registered our URL) link to the folder for that specific URL within the IP address? Makes sense to me that it would work... but does it?!? Am I getting ahead of myself here?

You sure can! What you are after is a configuration called apache virtual host.

The term Virtual Host refers to the practice of maintaining more than one server on one machine, as differentiated by their apparent hostname. For example, it is often desirable for companies sharing a web server to have their own domains, with web servers accessible as www.company1.com and www.company2.com, without requiring the user to know any extra path information.

Thanks, I'll forward that link on to my husband who takes care of all that stuff. :P

On Dreamhost you need to add both domains to your control panel and the system automatically creates and links the domains to those new folders. Once that is done you need to go to Godaddy and set the DNS to Dreamhost DNS. It must be a similar procedure with all hosting companies I guess. It was not possible to do this with Brinkster tough.

They're pretty good. Reasonable prices and about $6 per domain. Total MySQL and PHP support.

With Dreamhost, it says I get 3 domains, and 15 sub domains. Further, it say I get one free domain.

Does this mean that I get one free domain registered, and if I was to host another domain on my webspace, I'd need to buy it?

Ivan's picture

Yes. I think only one is free.

Oh, heck. lolz

So what about the subdomains? Do I have to buy them too? By the way, I'm new to this so correct me if I'm wrong, I'd register the domain I really want for free and host it on my Dreamhost webspace.

Then, if I was to host another domain on my Dreamhost webspace, what steps do I take.

Ivan's picture

You go to the control panel and select Domains. There you can add subdomains to your added domains. And you can also add new domains.

Just to pipe in with my recommendations, I tried dreamhost and had nothing but hassle and aggressiveness when i dare to try and contact customer service.
So I cancelled the card, got a refund and went with Hostgator and I have not regretted it for one moment.
