if you want to throw in a little comedic "heh" you can put a pair of xylaphone sticks on the side (or perhaps kinky, furry xylaphone sticks)

I like the concept, I would just try the same layout with:
1) Crayons.
2) Gradual colors, like a rainbow colors.

Another concept just popped in mind: a busy street with people walking, but with two or three of them having different colored faces..

Edit: I'm assuming the photo of the color caps is just a place holder and will not be used for the final ad, due to the use of direct flash.

It took me a second to work this one out completely - but then it's a lot of fun. Maybe just change the pen lids themselves to make them 'more like pen lids'?
