Dustbin
caoimghgin (842 pencils) | Wed, 2011-08-03 11:31A little OSX icon I've been working on for a program called Dustbin.
Program cleans desktop of all files and moves them into a dated folder in your home directory. Excellent for busy neat freaks who want a clean desktop but would rather not delete anything just yet.
If anybody posts 'Make it black and white' I will come through your monitor and throttle you. ;-)

Very good! Only feel strange about that center inside detail. Liked the thin main bright line on the rubber.
Did you try other colors like citrus green or anything more vibrant? This version palette is classic anyway.
yes I'm brazilian xD
You mean that "button" where the handle attaches to the pan? I agree. I'll fix that. I didn't try any other colors because of the 'classic' colors I chose. But now that you mention it, I'd like to see what a vibrant green would do.

hm I was talking about that center piece inner the shadow
yes I'm brazilian xD
gotcha. I think. I'll futz around with it.

the strokes around hazel parts could be a bit lighter, it's too much black.
yes I'm brazilian xD
Not sure it works for embroidery...
Are you sure the program isn't called 'dustpan'?

Nice render overall!!
Also +1 to qwerty on the inner line detail. I understand why the two center diagonal lines do meet, but they don't sit right to me and i'd address that.
You should post in black n white too :D But yeah that would only apply to logos.

Yes! Dustpan. Opps.

This is by far the best dustpan icon I have ever seen.
i get where youre going with the retro dustpan. and i like it.
but its a little too just... umm.. there.
might be more fun is it were angled a bit. or you added a wiskbroom.
+1
Good work on the detailing so far however. I may make the strokes around your darker brown element slightly lighter however so they don't stick out as much. Something darker at the bottom to help outline it more powerfully would possibly help as well.
Good call. Will do.

I'm digging it except for the two things already mentioned - the connection piece on the inside of the pan and the double black line around the brown detail on top (not sure you even need that - maybe just delete the two lines). Looks very realistic - good work. Why aren't you a world reknown illustrator yet?
It's good but lacks contrast. Put it into the dock and see it disappear. I think the same shape with a strong color would work better.
Make it black and white. Just kidding. :P
Overall I like it a lot. I'm not a big fan of that color, but you've rendered it very well.
@ncdesigns: you must be young. "that color" was the "avocado green" of office furniture in the 1960s
Younger than the '60s, yes. I'm aware that it was a hot color in that era, but I wasn't around yet.
Yes, and this is rendered in the lovely shade avocado green's cousin, "harvest gold." Perfect for hanging in some grandmother's kitchen.
I agree. Color is horrible. But that's why I liked it. ;-)

It sends the right message though if it's a program to store/ move old files that haven't been used in awhile.
Very lovely Cao, nice job. LOVE the retro color palette!
As was mentioned I'd look at the outlines around the copper plate; they're a bit too dark and make the copper look like a sticker rather than a three dimensional element. Also, if they're meant to represent groove or embossing in the copper, they could some highlights. Other than that very well done!
Looks really nice, only thing that bothers me is some of the line work is a bit heavy. For example around the orange panel at the top and the very top of the handle.

Retro dustpan. I believe I've implemented everyones suggestions.

And for sheer rudeness. A green that is sure to hurt your eyes.

Hey guys, thanks for all the comments. I've spent more time on the icon than I have writing the program. If there are any other improvements, I'll be sure to do them once the application is done.

I think the new one works, good job!
New one is boring plain green instead of sweet retro avocado green, but overall fine work.
Oh I don't think I'll use the green one. Just playing. Anyway, here is final. For now...

Your text shadow goes against your highlight.
not to be too cheeky. but the text might look better a little translucent like a decal or stamped in the metal
No text! Why ruin it with text? Icons don't need text!
Agreed! Plus, Cooper Black? Seriously?
Ohhhh FINE! I'll remove the text. And if this wasn't the best use of Cooper Black EVER I'll eat my Helvetica.

ok better without text.
yes I'm brazilian xD
Best use of Cooper Black since, well, people used it. :) I really like this design. It's fun. I agree with Ivan about it needing more contrast, but overall, yay. I wouldn't remove any of the details; they're what give it playful dignity. I just made that up.
A propos nothing much, I remember office equipment that color in the 60s, especially an electric pencil sharpener that everybody had, along with the equally ubiquitous Hon office furniture. It was so depressing! No wonder people used to hide Snickers bars and bottles of whiskey in their file drawers. :/
