Do we consider this post spam?

Why would this be spam? I'm a real user, organizing a real event taught by a very well known creative business coach and design community advocate that's likely of interest to other forum users and that will benefit the design community. It's not I'm advertising a pyramid scheme or viagra.

KERNSPIRACY is a grassroots volunteer organization which exists to educate and build community among Los Angeles designers. Events are usually free (i.e., paid for entirely out of my pocket), but sometimes, as in this case, we have lots of expenses to cover so unfortunately there's a fee associated with this particular event.

I'm happy to answer any questions anybody has about it.

With Ivan on this one regarding an initial SPAM. In fact, still am. I thought this was a "forum" for advice, discussions, and critiquing each other's creations...not selling seats.

Also, what's wrong with a good ole Viagra ad?

yah, i'm w/3dogmama here, too.

if you were a *real* user, you only post on this site wouldn't be an advertisement for an event.

not that it might not be a useful event for members here, but come on, at least take a minute to introduce yourself and participate on the site. if you can't do that, then this post is basically an unpaid ad.

>if you were a *real* user, you only post on this site wouldn't be an advertisement for an event.

Just because I'm a "new" user doesn't mean I'm not a "real" user and frankly the reception so far isn't especially inviting. If somebody wants to take it down, take it down. It's your forum. But I don't see how removing content that's likely of interest to at least some users (because there are plenty of self-employed designers that are interested in professional development classes) serves your community. Not to mention that if I were posting about the exact same event because I thought sounded cool but I had no hand in organizing nobody would think twice, yet it would be the same information.

And this wasn't my first post. I made a post on March 5th introducing myself and KERNSPIRACY and announcing this class. Somebody must've decided that was spam too and deleted it. So, in the future, I'll refrain from posting event announcements here, which is a shame because we do some pretty awesome things and 99.9% of it is free.

It's nothing personal, people are just tired of so much spam on forums and we're trying to keep it as clean as possible because reading spam is taking our little and valuable free time.

I think you made your point convincingly and thank you for that.

i apologize if you feel your reception isn't inviting. my point is that people wonder about "spam" from a user that has one (or two, if your original post was deleted) posts and both are announcing an event. by "real" user i meant someone who contributes to the site in general, not someone who has only stopped by to announce an event.

and honestly, if your only two posts were about that event, i would presume you had a hand in organizing it. why else would you join a forum and only post about an event?

as ivan said, we get a ton of spam and it does get annoying.

i'd be happy to see you join us and become a contributing member of the site, and i'm sure most people would. we're not unwelcoming, most of us would just like to see people who join the site become a member of the community and not just use the forums to advertise. if you had made yourself a part of the community first, nobody would have made any comments about your posts being spam.
