education foundation logo
wgzn (1711 pencils) | Sun, 2011-11-27 03:39i was contacted by a friend last night to create a quick logo for a college scholarship foundation created by and in memorial of her father, a successful local businessman who passed away friday morning (please don't let that sad fact influence your critiques)
anyway. this foundation will provide financial assistance to students who meet certain criteria. its a mix of those who may be financially disadvantaged and or have shown particular interest or aptitude or simply effort in certain study areas.
that's basically all i was told. and was asked to secure the domain and park something there as quickly as possible. so i threw this together this afternoon.
the initials are obvious. its the guys name. just picked a font that i felt suited his personality (that'll be tough for you guys to judge) the swooshy thing was intended to simply be a divider. but as i worked it a bit, it started to look like an open book. which kind of made sense to me.
at first glance i like the general aesthetic more than i thought i would for something i spent about 22 minutes on. but i wonder what fresh eyes would think...?
have at it!

The transition from the type in "RICHARD WAYNE POLLARD" to "education foundation" is really bumpy. Looks separated from the rest of the logo.
The two lines of type are also way too small. Look at the thumbnail – even with RWP relatively big, all the type is completely illegible. Even the squiggly line thing is shy.
"RWP", with that type and color, tries to be in focus. Centered and powerful. It loses all that POW and integrity when it's hovering above an illegible cloud of weak gray elements and with random dots tucked between its armpits.
Drop the RWP. Doesn't help communicate the message. In fact, the message should be simple. The Richard Wayne Pollard Scholarship Foundation.
Set it in a classy and memorable font and keep the entire thing the same size. Ta-da. Done. Sometimes the best design only requires a good eye for fonts and a bit of kerning.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
Should I give totally different advice to really confuse you? The bottom font is out of place. Looks like eurostyle or some other 80s industrial face matched with a very traditional serif. Not working imho.
My thinking (take it or leave it...) Remove the RWP, initial cap the name, enlarge 2-4 points - possibly one weight bolder - possibly in the maroon color, "educational foundation" in the same font (thinner weight, smaller size) all caps. Then try it above or below the swoop (which should emphasize the "book" idea by reducing the end wings).
As always... jmho.
I liked the RIP and swash the first time I glanced at them, but on second glance, the RWP reminded me too much of RIP (rest in peace). The dots plus the book swash make a kind of face (eyes and a 'stache). I did, however, immediately translate the swash as an open book and I think that's a nice element just as it is. I think the other suggestions made by Art D. Rector in his last paragraph are just right.

yeah. that's one of the things that prompted me to post this. wanted to see if anyone else noticed that...
I notice it now. And the two bottom lines are the lips.
you don't need RWP
yes I'm brazilian xD
Agreed that Eurostyle font doesn't work with the rest. It should be the same font as the name and pushed up closer to it. Drop shadow is doing you no favors. The gray dots don't need to be there. I do like the divider that's also suggesting a book. I'd work on it more, maybe add some pages to cement the idea.
