When your Mac breaks down

This is blog post is about your worst nightmare you have while owning a computer, it breaks down on you and the only solution is after a while taking it to a repair place..
Well exactly this happened me last saturday, I was working on my website and other work, suddenly my computer behaved strange and begun to freeze the system so I rebooted the computer and then it hit me.. The computer didn't start the system or made any kind of startup sound which is a sign on good health and the powerled didn't glow.. What to do? PANIC!!!
When a computer breaks down or crash it's always in a bad moment..
Let's face it, without a computer and the ability to use the net you won't find very much information that could help you out to fix the machine.. I managed to surf to Apple Swedens page on my mobile phone and from there check out the nearest "Authorized Service Provider" and on monday I went with the machine into town and got it back on thursday.. What was it? The logicboard or motherboard as some calls it was broken, and a new one was put in the G5 and now it's healthy but I learned something along the way as well..
Here some useful tips:
1. When your computer is healthy, check up the nearest Service Provider, and write it on a paper and put it somewhere, because if you only got your mac and it has break down, you hardly could use your apple site to check for service providers can you, if you don't happen to have another computer or do it in some other way..
2. Also write down the serial number of your machine, the Service Provider will need this to validate with Apple to get spare parts to your mac..
3. This is actually a tip if your Mac get's stolen.. Write down your MAC adress just after you buy it or now? And if someone for instance steal your Powerbook, you can get it back by contacting ISP's and using the MAC Adress in order to track the theif and call the police in order to get your mac back. This has been used in Sweden to get stolen macs back.. It's very difficult and almost impossible to change your computers MAC Adress..
Btw. it's good to be back :)

Welcome back! You're right
Welcome back! You're right one has to do backups and write down all the info you mentioned. Thanks for the heads up.
We are so dependent on our computers nowadays. There is only one thing better than a Mac. Two Macs.
Don't forget...
Or a woman.
DON'T PANIC!
DON'T PANIC!
How do you find out what mac
How do you find out what mac address is? Or is it that actually your ethernet address?
Finding the MAC adress..
Go to "About this computer" and choose "More info"
Then you goto Network and then configuration and you'll find it there
Even handier...
copy just the main hardware details in system profiler and paste into a text edit doc, then PRINT to encrypted PDF and mail to an offline web mail account eg gmail. Its encrypted, so no access unless you type the password.

Logic Boards and stolen Macs
Sorry, you had to go through this. It is a hassle and consumption of time that most of us just can't afford. One looses too much time, and time is money as we all got used to. But I have to take issue with the statement you made about MAC addresses. Its is anyhting but hard to change them (see link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address#Mac_OS_X) [there is nothing that can't be changed in the hands of a skilled user; and the search for a MAC address within a given subnet [and large ISPs have too many to count] could take years [both actual data sifting and man hours - which may be a reason that a company will not help easily] if the ISP happens to be as large as let's say AOL, Adelphia or Earthlink. This only works on very small ISPs. There are methods, like setting up a scripts to dial ones phone number and convince the police to trace it, as a report a few years back mentions this on wired and the Timbuktu Pro website netopia.com. But that hinges on the fact that you can convince the police to invesigate. In some countries thay may be too busy with crimes that are more urgent, then someones stolen computer.
And btw the logicboard is very similar to a 'mother'- or main board, but not the same. A logicborad does not contain a BIOS, the basic "usage" instructions for a computer.
