Interesting quote from the article:
"Some six years later, soon after the advent of OS X, computer security expert Winn Schwartau created a widely publicized tool geared to helping companies in any industry measure the TCO [Total Cost of Ownership] of Macs versus Windows PCs. Schwartau emphasizes that results from the tool can vary considerably from one business to the next. But at his own small enterprise—then known as Interpact and now dubbed The Security Awareness Company—three-year TCO turned out to be twice as high for Windows than Mac."
Can't agree more. I've kept
Can't agree more. I've kept all my macs for up to 7 years and my PowerBook G3 Pismo is still operational and useful. Screen is a bit dark compared to the contemporary laptops.
It's all about the maintenance
Most larger companies are replacing their computers every 3 years or so regardless of what kind they are. Where the "cost" comes in is maintenance, down-time, problems, etc... Windows flat out is MUCH harder to administer & maintain.
But those costs are usually overlooked by the bean-counting accounting departments when approving budgets. They only look at the immediate costs. It's just silly.

Personnel down-time for
Personnel down-time for maintenance issues is high enough, but when you also factor in the amount of time a lot of PC people eat up playing video games at work -- because they're STARVED for good graphics? -- the cost skyrockets.
I'm absolutely amazed at how helpless people in PC-based offices are when something happens to their "machines." True, Macs aren't as user-friendly as they used to be in terms of solving your own hardware and OS problems, but then, compared with PCs, there aren't any! :-)
Mara
I'm sorry but you're wrong
I'm sorry but you're wrong about a lot of things you said. First, my husband and his buddies play video games on -- guess what? Macs. The OS doesn't have much to do with that anymore.
Secondly, Macs are WAY more user-friendly, this is a huge misconception. You plug it in, you're done. If you try to plug something in to a PC, you will be doing stupid driver crap all afternoon finally at some point you may even end up taking the dang keyboard or whatever back. Hardware is a piece of cake on a mac. Software? Just as easy.
You don't need a degree in IT to use and maintain a mac. Which is why there is little to no market for Mac IT personnel. Our Mac IT dude backs up our files and proofreads for us all day with nothing else to do.
OS X to OS 9
I'm afraid you misread her statement... Mara indicated that OSX isn't as 'user-friendly' in terms of solving your own hardware and OS problems as we once experienced with OS9 but is still far easier than the PC.
Huh?
You both appear to agree that the Mac is easy to upgrade/maintain... so what "lot of things she said" is she wrong about?
Mar was referring to PCs, not Macs.
