Equine Business logo
waffleboy (68 pencils) | Tue, 2012-06-12 03:35Ooook,
So it's been a while since I posted anything, but this is a logo for a Horse training business that has locations in both Canada and the USA. They train Arabians, and when champion horses are "crowned" they are draped in a rose garland (http://www.arabhorse.com/photo_galleries/articles/2395/13083_medium.jpg) so the maples leaves are a play on that. It's kinda bugging me for some reason, I need a fresh set of eyes to look at it. Few days straight of staring at it will do that I guess! :D
Thanks,
Carson

Quick update:
Didn't like the negative space between the stars and the horse's jaw. I think this is a bit better.
I think too much is happening. Simplify.
yeah, too much going on.
the horse is cartoony and the obscured stars are just messy.
reboot
I thought that the 'stars' are maple leaves...?

What is the end purpose of most of these horses? Are they bred for show or race? If race, make it fierce, if show maybe something more proud in silhouette? The neck right now just seems low like its grazing, not the end result of high-trained quality.
Other than that, really busy. I think putting in the country throwbacks in is really over complicating things and the North/ South was really hard to read without any sort of proper attention given to reading it.
wholly crap! i didnt even SEE north / south...
Neither did I, I had to look at the full preview because it was so small in the initial image.
again, here is a good example of logo "rules":
if it doesnt work at the size of a dime. it doesnt work.
I suppose horse head shape is fundamental to identify the race. The garland don't need to be exactly as put on the horse, you can do it subtle but with evidence.
You can lose weight with charm lines instead of filled shapes.
yes I'm brazilian xD
Looks a little slap dash and more illustration than logo. From the magazine cover and what little I know about the horse industry - this would have to appeal to a very high end client. Simple, clean, sharp... you're trying to do way too much imho. Pick one idea - don't try to fit everything in there (horse, garland, stars, north/south, maple leaves...)
I've done a lot of design work in the horse industry. No one is more particular about conformation, proper profiles and so on than breeders so if you insist on using an Arabian's head in silhouete, it had better be perfect. Check the Arabian Horse Association site.
The garland that goes around a winning horse's neck is usually flowers associated with the state the race was in (black-eyed susans at the Preakness, for example). Npot sure how it is in other places, but if your inspiration is the laurel wreath from classic Greek athletic competitions, the leaves would be pointing downward, not up.
Right now, this looks like three bits of clip art slapped together over some ho-hum wording. I Also, I realize we usually recommend posting logos in black-and-white, but in this case, if you are going for US/Canada, then the maple leaves should probably be red and the stars can be blue. But then, you're stuck with a logo that only makes sense in three colors. That might or might not pose a problem.

Maybe it's just me, but the solid black silhouette of the horse really overpowers the whole thing. Maybe it was a client imposed limit, but it would be nice if the text was a lot bigger. Keeping everything tucked inside a square makes it harder to read IMHO.
