Equus Graphics Logo
waffleboy (64 pencils) | Wed, 2010-07-07 19:02Hi all,
I'm starting a bit of a side company that will be involved in the horse community quite a bit. I'm calling it Equus Graphics. The logo I'm coming up with seems a bit typical of a 'horsey' logo, I would like to go a bit more less obvious with the horse head, but you guys be the judge.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
CE

I don't get it, you'll be doing mainly designs for horses? As in what? What happens if you start getting contracts that don't involve horses? I'm just a confused, th elogo itself is simple and gets the job done, I just find it weird that someone would create their logo based on the niche market they would be designing for. Who knows, maybe you're on to something.

the logo itself isnt bad, but just like leaky said, are you sure you want to confine yourself on that niche, besides you didnt explain too much on why you want to design just for horses, and imo add something else that says graphics not just the actual text or tag saying it.
from a purely design perspective, the Q is a little off-putting to me. i like the typography ok other than that, but the Q jumps out, and i'm not really comfortable with that. it doesn't seem like it should.
your horse head proportions are... odd. cartoonish, even. the ear is a little too pointy (horn-like?) and the head is a little squished in the middle (almost more like a fat anteater head instead of horse head). my first reaction to the shape of the head was to think dragon's lair style cartoon.
side note: i hate the words "graphics* with an "S" on the end. hate hate hate. that may be personal, but almost every time i see an ad hiring a "graphics artist," it means they have no idea what a graphic designer does. they want a "make it pretty" person.
but that may just be my personal bias.
You may want to type "equus" in google I am not sure you want that kind of recognition...
I'm involved with the Arabian horse show circuit, which has quite a bit of media attached to it. There is over 3 nationally published magazines that promote the business and quite a bit of money in the promotion of the various farms. But that aside, I also have my mainstream studio that I do everyday work from. So I'm not relying on a niche, 'horse people' seem to hire horse oriented companies, so I'm just trying to appeal to the crowd. :)
Here it is without the italic q
Let me know what you think.
Thanks.
p.s. 'equus' is a horse term, i don't really care if there is a play with a naked Daniel Radcliff in it by the same name lol.
yeah gang. lets not discount the potential success in nice market focus. there is a LOT of money to be made in such pursuits. especially in various, high-end livestock games...
i like where youre going with the revised version waffle. yes, the horse head is a bit cartoonish. but in this case it might not be a problem. i would suggest though trying a bit more regal/realistic approach, just as an experiment. and a/b them...
and gwells - i LOVE your pet peeve about "graphics" thats one of mine as well! (it hacks me off almost as much as when somebody working from their basement calls themselves "xyz studioS. as in plural. just reeks of trying too hard) but i dont think that applies here. if it read "equus graphics design" id agree. but i think in this case its an acceptable grey area...
thanks for the support. ;)
i mention the cartoon-like head shape because it doesn't really seem to go with the typography. the typography is crisp and clean and the logomark is cartoonish. these two things seem at odds with each other.
waffleboy, i do think the non-italicized Q looks better. I don't think the italicized version adds anything. did you have a specific purpose for adding that in?
I like it.
The name could be Equus "Graph" something more stylish than merely "Graphics".
yes I'm brazilian xD
It almost works on a sublime level. Maybe an even more simplified horse head or just a little something done to the text to make it yours will put this over the top. It looks nice, but that's about the only thing you can say about it - there's nothing special here, imho.
"- there's nothing special here, imho."
i think we all (myself included) get a little tied up expecting everything to be "special."
sometimes a logo just needs to be utilitarian.
sometimes a song is just a song. doesnt need to be a hit single.
If you want the song to sell it has to be a hit single.
I'm just saying...
Thanks everyone. This helps a lot :) I appreciate the support!
Hey, if you're creating this brand just to cater to that industry, just put a logo out there to have your identity known to them. If you have another logo for your main design work for every other niche out there, make that one shine. Sounds to me like the work from Arabian horse show circuit is guaranteed work so the purpose of creating a logo is just a formality anyways to put a "face" on your business.
Just don't try anything cute like spelling "Graphics" Graphx.

This logo looks great, but it also looks like it's been done before.

Oh THAT'S where I saw it before.
I still like it though. It could work, I mean all simple logos will look like something. Do you think it's too similar?

Is it a horse, or a unicorn?
