esdesign mockup v.1

Still have some serious "designers block" when it comes to redesigning my personal site. This is the best idea I've had so far. This is *extremely* rough, just a Photoshop mockup right now. The placement and color of the text is fairly arbitrary so far, plus there will be more than just a big body of blog-like text on the page once I've written up some real content (the site's not going to have a blog, but I probably will have a news/updates section on the front page). Just wanted to get a feel for the basic layout... I think something needs to be done with that empty space at the top of the page next to the logo. Wonder if I should even go in this direction.

I like it. It doesn't stand out much but it's very easy to read and would be very easy to navigate. The color for the heading stands out well without being overwhelming. I feel like there should be some tiny bit of color in the header. Otherwise is a nice, clean design

I would try a few more layouts, it may work for a blog but since that is not the objective I think its a bit boring.

You got it right. I've been looking at too many pages with blogs, which isn't what I'm going for.

I think your logo is very good. But don't stop there. Ask yourself what impression do you want your audience to have once they get to your site? If your trying to sell yourself as a designer then show off your style. If it is my website, I would like my site to match my style. If your style is simple and elegant, then you need to add something more to it that will WOW them, perhaps some color as Fuelrock indicated.

Don't take yourself too seriously, nobody else does.

yup, its a good start, but it needs more work.
first of all you should really write down a list of all the elements on your site.
you got the logo, the menu and an article (with title, date and content).
but what else do you need?
search field, poll, visual, thumbnails, footer, copyright note, link style, "read more" button, bullets, columns, etc. im surely you're missing something.
in other words you're not stuck because of the graphics, but because you're making up the elements as you go. no elements, no go. :)

as for what it is now, i think you should have a smaller font for the menu, i dunno, tighter spacing, not bold, make it look more modern.
i like the logo very much. as it is now in the layout, i bet it would look good to have the horizontal line in the e, the same color as the title.
but its your own logo, would want to spoil it.

A personal portfolio site should be seen and not "heard". I disagree with the above comments that the site is "boring" or needs more work. Let your portfolio do the talking... If the site was brightly coloured and had loads of fancy features, then who would bother to look at your work? Keep the contrast down.

Fancy sites are for people with a crap portfolio...
