HEY! I just joined Facebook

HEY! I just joined Facebook a few weeks ago--a good friend wants to play Scrabble from afar.
Neat setup.
Not sure if you're able to log onto any of my other groups, but you may wish to check out my uncle's PETERS AND BELL one. :)
Cheers.

I like it myself...

Besides the million app and group invites, it's good times, especially since I moved far away from friends and family. GREAT for networking too.

Interesting. . .

Been on FB for a year, its like crack. LOL. But what initially sold me was the VERY good interface, no nonsense, clean and easy to navigate. . .

NOW with the new interface they've forced fed us. . . I dunno.

Anybody disagree? Agree? Strictly from a design point of view of course!

I totally love the new UI

Its very nice. I like the applications at the bottom of the window too.

What is a bit buggy is the way they've created the Photos. You have, Your Photos, Your Albums, Photos of you and Your Profile Photo! It's like..just have one set of photos! ARRGH!

Ahhhhh

I installed that app once and then removed it. . . lol actually I spend LESS time using the apps on FB than doing discussions in the forums. . . I was a FB noob and installed a TON of apps and then realised, I hardly use them nor find them helpful in my life in general. . . so. . . bye bye apps.

The ONLY app that I loved was Scrabulous and they removed it. . . pity.

i think...

They came up with an alternate "Scrabble" after the makers of Scrabble sued. Ironically enough, the new app was even more popular than the one the makers of Scrabble came out with!

The only app I really enjoy is the Lolcats cause..errr...well...yeah. Let's not go there!

disagree?

I actually like the new facebook, which is quite an unpopular opinion, apparently! I hated all the apps being EVERYWHERE on the old one—if I wanted trashy, flashing chaos I'd be on myspace. The new facebook's nice because:
you don't have to scroll to get to the wall—or for any reason, really—the tabs keep the interface more organized, and you don't ever have to look at a single application, unless you want to. Once people quit complaining and just use it, I think they'll come around...
just my two cents.

Leaky Penny's picture

it takes some getting used to, sure...

And frankly I'm SICK of all the groups of people complaining and whining...definitely the down part of facebook, people thinking that joining groups solves three quarters of the worlds problems..but I digress.

while i'm on facebook, i

while i'm on facebook, i think linkedin is a much more professional way to do business marketing. facebook is something i use to keep up with my friends, linked in is what i use to keep up with former colleagues and business relationships. it's just much more professional.

ireid's picture

I'm on linked in too

But its not as easy to navigate as Facebook. . .

Its kinda scary too. . .I still not sure how it really works. Any advice?

maybe it's just perspective.

maybe it's just perspective. i don't find it any more difficult to navigate than facebook, just different.

in principle, it works very much like facebook as far as adding linked people. once you link to someone, you can see who they're linked to. you can add people who have some sort of business connection to you fairly easily if you find them through searching or on someone else's connections list. you just have to be able to show how you're connected (via a business, an organization, etc). if you don't have that kind of connection, you need to know their email address. that keeps random people from trying to link to you (for the most part).

your home page will show the activity of people you are connected to (who their new connections are, what groups they've joined, etc).

it's definitely more structured than facebook and it's designed to avoid getting too much spam.

Leaky Penny's picture

For sure

Facebook could be used as more of a word of mouth, casual contract site whereas LinkIn is more of corporate, "big wig" site. I've had mine for a while but how do you get started on it? I only have two ex classmates on it last time I checked and never really pursued any further..quite an intimidating experience IMO.

I'm a member of Linkedin as

I'm a member of Linkedin as well and have yet to explore its networking capabilities. The only reason I joined was that I work with several people already involved on it and was invited. Not sure how the new biz angle works...yet...

"Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible."

gwells's picture

i think it takes some time

i think it takes some time for the networking capabilities to make themselves useful. at least for me, it's becoming more useful over time as a way to maintain connections with people that i worked with in the past. i now know how to get ahold of people i worked with 10+ years ago at price waterhouse. i've even had a couple of them approach me about doing some work for their companies.

so imo, the way it's worked best for me is to use it to broaden my contact list of former coworkers/clients so that i have ways of contacting them years down the line. and, as well, they have ways of contacting me. even if it's for them to refer a potential client or employer to me. but you still have to work the list, it's just a way of managing those contacts.

plus, if i'm looking for someone at a company i might be interested in down the line, i may be able to find a friend of a friend to ask questions of. one of my contacts is a very connected print rep. i can always look on Joe's list to see who he knows before calling him about a company.

btw, didn't mean to imply that facebook would be a bad way to get more people involved in the site. i was only stating my personal way of using the two sites. i think i came across a little strong.

3dogmama's picture

Believe me, it did not come

Believe me, it did not come across strong. I agree with Facebook being more of a personal venue rather than a professional one, and see this newly formed FB-CB group as a gateway to attract people to this awesome blog.

However, I could be proven wrong on a biz angle with Facebook? My uncle swears by it for networking.
