Fancy pants
huguenot (5 pencils) | Tue, 2010-04-13 02:15this is a logo for a wine bar. It was a class assignment, the first of four. We were supposed to create an art bar/venue. we were supposed to chose the theme. when i had it printed for class the lady said it would work better as a tux shop.

tuxes, cigars, scotch, maybe.
wine? not even in the ballpark. nothing about that guy says "wine" at all.
The kerning is off between the P and a in Pants.
Agree with above comments...NOTHING says wine here.
Cork, wine glass, red stain on white linen fancy pants...needs to be explored more.

yeah, um... this is bad. no rhythm in the marks. dont know what the focal point is. why is the hat somewhat rendered while the face is a line drawing.
haha there's a cute java game my kids play called Fancy Pants!
but that aside, I agree as well on some points. this logo could be for anything regarded as being for the elderly males of the upper-class... cigar shop, auto-club, the club-house at the golf course... which can be solved by adding two simple words, but it's better if it has the "punch" of a related graphic to drive the message home
further the figure is too symmetrical, to unnatural, or at least the hat is and there's no emotion there either...
on one hand, I like the gesture drawing idea though, but there are some serious issues that need to be addressed:
the lines make it confusing and it takes a moment to figure out what your seeing... and that moment could be the crucial moment when the shop loses it's next customer because the sign on the cafe next door was recognized first... it's possible to still use the lines idea but trick the eye into understanding it instantly... I'd just tell you but then you lose out on the fun of experimentation (and hey, you're in college, experiment while you still can!)
you know about the kerning...
colors: purple black and gold looks good, but the greyscale version should have the text and lines as solid black rather than shades of grey (screens)

too much details.
