Farmers Market Logo
gnasm (242 pencils) | Tue, 2010-02-09 10:38HI everyone.
A suburb in my area is having a logo design contest for their Summer farmers market. While this is a legit contest, one of my design classes is also using it as an assignment.
Info on the contest can be found here: http://www.tosafarmersmarket.com/index.php/minews/7-catinformational/13-design-our-new-logo
Info on the city of Wauwatosa can be found here: http://www.wauwatosa.net
Essentially it's a small farmers market in a large 'burb just outside a major city (Milwaukee). Lots of middle class families that value things like cafes, farmers markets, and the current trend of "going green." A community known for good schools, good neighbors, and low crime. There's a quaint historical village center with nice restaurants and bakeries and the like, and the farmers market will be held near there.
As far as my design, it's based on the lids of mason jars used for canning food. I wanted something that referenced agriculture and had a home-made feeling, without being a basket of produce or something equally obvious.
I'm mostly happy with it, but I feel like there's something missing. Some folksy design element in the dark space above and below the text maybe? Also, I'm a bit unsure of the colors. These lids are usually a pale brass color, but I'm not sure what I have is working.
As always, I appreciate you taking the time to help.

Overall, I like.
The woodcut drop shadow should be simplified (less lines). I know you're going for a mason jar lid, but somehow I feel the word 'Farmers' wants to break out of the circle. Otherwise, experiment with perspective. Something to make the mark not look flat upon the page. Another idea is to place two ribbons below, as if it were a prize you'd win at a county fair for squash or whatever.
Looking forward to new rounds. Nice stuff.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
Nice briefing, thanks for that,
In the thumbnail I though I was looking at the Burgerking logo

Nevermind..
A lot of layers in the fonts, maybe skip 1
Also not to fond about the color, looks a bit like nougat
give us more.
Hi gnasm,
I found interesting things about TOSAFEST xD

It seems very very eclectic people... xD
I'd expect AMISH people festival xD
You could vertically center the text to adjust the up and bottom brown parts.
Maybe regular "TOSA" is better than italic. Test different % heighs. You could use different fonts or Regular+Bold effect too.
yes I'm brazilian xD
Like your brief, like your thinking, like your art... just don't think it makes a very good logo (more like a decal or something). You're right when you say it's missing something, but the problem here is it's already way too detailed and complex to be a mason jar lid - add anything else to it and you kill that part of the equation.
I'm guessing the winner will be something along the lines of one of those old fruit crate illustrations. Please let me know if I'm right.
The briefing is very clear. However your logo does not give a strong answer to trhe briefing. It does not going green. The home-made feeling does not come over. It looks like
The Burger King logo. You want to avoid the obvious like a basket or produce. Sometimes that is what it takes to communicate the right message. An other possibility is simplifing your logo and making a branding iron image in a peice of wood like you could find on a crate or store sign. This communicates pure, back to nature and avoids the obvious.
Good luck.
Thanks all! Truthfully I think your comments on the whole were on the mark, though personal pride won't let me admit my design has anything in common with the Burger King logo other than basic shape... regardless of the accuracy of that comparison.
While I didn't devote much more time to it's refinement, I did make some minor tweaks. Hopefully the result looks a little better. Find it here: http://www.creativebits.org/farmers_market_logo_revisted
