feedback please

As some of you may know, on the forum I administer we change the logo to reflect the events of the day - history, birthdays, holidays in our members home countries etc. Yesterday I had a special request to commemorate the tragic terrorist attack on the Madrid train system and came up with the graphic below, based on a photo cribbed off the web. (The words in Spanish say "we were all riding on that train")

The right hand side proved a challenge. since the original graphic was shorter than the logo - if you look carefully above and behind the "v" of "vagon" you'll see where I cut and pasted to continue the rail down to the lower right.

I'm reasonably satisfied with the inscription in Spanish but very unhappy with the upper right hand corner. It is a small space, and I wanted the words to be easy to read - but it came out stark and graceless. What are some ways that I could have done this better?

susato, sorry but i must tell you the whole thing doesn't look so great. it's a difficult subject, so i realize it's not easy. maybe you should set up a template for this header, where you would only only change an image and a headline. that way you would not have to come up with a new design each time and it would also make it look more organized. concerning this one if it was not too late i would've said start over from scratch.

That bad, huh? :D Seriously though, thanks for the frank reply. It was, as you say, a difficult subject made more challenging by the wide, flat "banner" dimensions - no appropriate image from the web even began to fit the space.

Concerning your template idea - I will think carefully about it. The "more organized" look would probably be helpful for first time forum visitors though not necessarily for regulars. Currently there are three of us doing these headers, each with a different individual style, so it might be hard to enforce uniformity.

not that bad at all. i don't think it's a problem to enforce a style on all parties, that's how graphic standards work in big scale companies, but if you want diversity that's another issue. :) let me know if all you guys are busy, i'm here to help the cause as well.

My opinion is that it would have been good with only the roses and the black/white rails.. All other things is disturbing in my point of view.. The image with the roses on the rail says it all in my guess.. perhaps a less discrete text only.

The red roses and the pink background in the corner looks totally wrong.

That's my feedback!

I'll chime in and say that the whole thing looks like a sensationalistic web banner, rather than a tribute. It's very cold & commercial. I agree with others that the flowers on the track is enough – the snipe in the corner makes it look like a coupon ad.

As Ivan said, a uniform "template" would be the best route to go. Though if your heart is set on unique graphics, I would definitely re-think this one.
