Feeling STOO-pid! Can somebody coach me here?

What I'm trying to do is capture a rectangular image in credit-card shape (rounded corners) to layer over another image in Photoshop CS3 (Mac OS). I can't for the life of me remember how do do this incredibly simple thing. It's something to do with the Rounded Rectangle Tool and vectors , I think, but -- eek! I sure would appreciate a little help from those of you who paid attention when they were covering this in the class I never attended because I was too busy thinking I knew it all.

Not totally sure what you are trying to accomplish, but I bet there are myriad ways to accomplish it.

Off hand, I would say to draw a vector shape with the rounded rectangle tool to the proper size, make a selection of that vector layer, then cut it out of the photo in question and place it.

So, you want to make an image have a certain shape?

Create your vector shape. Apple+click the layer with desired shape to select it. Choose the layer you're wanting to give this shape to. Add layer mask. Select inverse. Delete.

I will give you another one,

Make your picture a normal layer by double clicking it.

Select your rounded rectangle tool, and make sure you draw a shape.

Draw your rounded rectangle.

Put the picture layer on top of the rectangle layer.

Hold down the optio (alt) key and move your cursor in betwee the two layers, at a certain point you will see two circles appear, at this moment click.

The picture is now clipped to the shape beneath.

It was a little tricky to do one-handed (I have a broken right wrist in a cast up over my elbow for at least anther week), but it worked like a charm. Thanks, Fidel! I'll try Pokie's suggestion, too, but for now, yay! I really appreciate the help, ya'll.

Forgot about that. . . :(

I wish I could sign your cast. . .

...they took the original one off today, allowed me time to wash and scratch (JOY!), then put on this lighter weight hard fiberglas thing that I wear for two more weeks. It's heavenly compared with the original plaster "sugar tongs" one that was open on the sides and held together with a ratty Ace bandage -- and it's signable, which the original one wasn't. I'm off to the cafe now to collect autographs. I'll have someone scribble CB for the gang here. ;-)
