Fins - Chophouse and Seafoods

Ok ok, it's been a while since I've actually posted something of my own instead of just critiquing others. With that said, here's one I'm working on, still just in schematic design phase. I omitted the sketches building up to this version, I normally preach the idea of showing all the options, but I just want feedback on this version right now.

It's in black and white for a reason, so that it works first, color can come next. I'm also tasked with the signage concept for outside the restaurant, and if i go with this logo i know how I'm going to do the sign and lighting for it, so maybe I'll be nice and post those designs when we get to it. hahaha.

With that said, critique away!

CHARLEMAGNE is a really nice uppercase font. Not too thick and not too thin at all. Really nice. Try that.

I really like your rough sketch so far. I'm anxious to see it when you fine-tune it on the computer. Please post if you think about it.

I just realized you meant the FINS font, didn't you? Sorry, I meant Charlemagne would be good for the Chophouse & Seafoods part. Sorry about that.

yeah, i meant for the FINS but I've decided to just draw it out instead of finding a font. the Charlemagne font is indeed a nice one, and I've used it before for something else, i don't remember what. However, i know that this will also become outdoor signage with backlighting, and therefor the serifs don't work well. I'm probably going to go with something much simpler, just haven't decided which yet..

thanks for the comments

it looks like the sydney opera house

i'm not sure if that's what you were going for, but i don't think so.

they don't really remind me of fins, they remind me more of dolphin's flippers. A fin is more of a scalene triangle [with one almost 90deg angle] and these shapes are more like a flipper, which is more of an isocoles triangle.

Sydney Opera House was my first thought. Too many things are demanding special attention, in the sense that it doesn't feel cohesive. I actually like the "Fins" text. You could easily create that font yourself if can't find one similar. But the rest seems as if it isn't working yet. I'd push is a little further, because you have a great font going there.

i have a font that is similar to what you have got there.

it's called broadway. i'm not sure where i got it from, but i can't find it on dafont.com, which means it probably wasn't free.

i put your iamge into WhatTheFont, but that was no help at all.

that font is SO CLOSE to what i was hoping for, i think i prefer the N with thick sides and a thin bar down. At least it's a good start. I'll probably just do the typography myself instead of an actual font. Thanks for pointing me in that direction though!

I'd never heard of WhatTheFont before. That's so cool!

Although I didn't read FINS to start with but ANS, but the overall look seemed restaurant and seaish so I then got that the shapes were fins. Maybe you could lose the line joining the F and the A? I like the treatment of the waves, but in keeping with your Broadway-esque typeface I would make them more calligraphic like and use the same treatement for the fins above. I think that would gel all your elements together nicely.

Also pretty sure Broadway is a font you have to pay for its from BT (Bitsteam). Good start!

yeah, i see what you mean, it's just me drawing too quickly and connecting the F and the I by accident, i'll be spacing it out for the final version. I'm really liking the linear look of the font instead of a calligraphic style. I'll try it out none the less. never hurt to look at all the options :)

thanks for the comment.

i like the concept, and the fins (though they remind me of the opera house too)
i'd suggest that you change the three wavy lines seperating the fins from the text toe a gentle convex curve, push up the text - and then put another, opposing curve at the bottom. the wavy lines look a bit distracting...

one of my sketches is just two lines that are more subtle then the 3 i have shown, i'm actually leaning more towards that the last 24 hours or so since i've drawn it.

I think i'm gonna take it all into illustrator tonight..

weeeeeeeee fun fun fun!

The sketch looks great. Is this a seafood restaurant in the Sidney bay? If so it works.

I wish it was in Sydney, and i realized it might look like that unfortunately.
