Yes, you can use the crop tool to go in either direction. There is no automated way though.

You can use the crop tool, as JimD suggests, or just go to the Image/Image Size dialog box and type in the exact dimensions you want.

You mean, make the canvas change to the size of the artwork? I use "trim" under the image tab. However, if you have effects added, you will have to flatten them for it to take the drop shadow or whatever into account.
Yes, but is there a way to fit the image to the canvas and maintain the aspect ratio, simply for resizeing an image?
Hi all there!
Just to add something:
Yes, you can do this without any problem!
1 - Create a new document (as your photo or something like this);
2 - Select the Magic Wand Tool;
3 - Select the image and then press Shift + Ctrl + I (on PC) or just go to Select menu / Inverse;
4 - Crtl + C to copy;
5 - Crtl + D to remove the selection;
6 - Crtl + V to paste and then a new layer will created automatically;
7 - Then you must use Trim... option to complete the operation: Image menu / Trim;
8 - Select Transparent pixels on "Base On" Option and select all option in Trim Away;
Job done! Perfect!
Thanks and se a!
