Fix for "pixelated" scans?

I have a scanned image where the dots from the print are fairly visible (CD cover). Is there any way to fix this in Photoshop, that would do a better job than say just blurring it? Any help is appreciated! :)

For this you need to do two things..
1. When you scanning them select options for "From Printed Sheet" this term will vary on the scanners.

2. Please go select in PSD-Filter-Noise-Add Noise, just apply this

One of the tricks I've used in the past to remove visible dots from a scanned printed piece is to apply the Photoshop filter, 'Despeckle'. It can be found under 'Filers - Noise - Despeckle'. Depending on the severity of the dots you may need to do this a couple of times in combination with a slight 'guassian blur'.

Unfortunately the finished results are at the mercy of the input.

There is an old saying, "Crap in, crap out.' You do the best with what you have to work with.

Thanks for the tips. I tried a few different solutions, but it seems that one solution might not be the right one for everyone. What worked best for me was to duplicate the layer, add a slight gaussian blur to the first, and then set the overlay to "soft light" for the second layer. Then I scaled down the picture.

I've found the Lens Blur filter to be the most useful for this problem. It's more subtle, and you have a lot of control over the result. Once that's done, a little extra Contrast (or, ironically, Sharpen) will often add just enough polish.

You can also try different resolutions in scanning. Some will yield better results than others. I guess that's what's behind Baski's suggestion about the "From Printed Sheet" setting, which I don't have on any of my scanner apps.

xGrape's suggestion sounds interesting. I might try it just for kicks.

ps: Try scanning at a higher percentage of physical size than you'll actually be using. If you get a decent result with all your tricks, then reducing the physical size should make the result even better, though maybe not. It's worth a try.

Scaling down the picture usually works, so scan at the highest resolution seems to be a good tip. In my case though, I already had the file given to me at a set resolution, ie. I didn't scan it myself. I'll definitely bookmark this page for future reference now :)

-look for a descreening option on your scanning software
-don't put your image perfectly straight up and down on the scanner. Rotate it around 20 degrees - it sometimes helps to get rid of the screening
-go into each rgb channel and use one of the blur filters. Some channels need more blurring than others
-take a photograph instead of scanning

Lab color mode works great! Convert your image to Mode/Lab and use command (or control on a pc) + ~(all plates) or 1 (detail) or 2 (lab a) or 3 (lab b). Don't mess with the detail image but pay attention to 2 and 3. You'll see the pixelezation there and you can blur it out somewhat.

Go back to command + ~ and see if the result is acceptable to you. I've found this can clean up even nasty moire patterns really well.
