Flash memory for laptops
Ivan | Wed, 2006-05-24 10:57I've been waiting for years for Apple to introduce flash memory for laptops to replace the hard disk. Now, they have experience with the iPod nanos, so it should not be a big problem to put a 30-40GB flash drive into the new MacBooks. It would make the machines super fast, the battery would last much longer and the whole thing would be more durable. I've read somewhere that Samsung is going to ship such laptops soon. Wonder why Apple isn't capitalizing on this technology???

While we're at it, why not add plug & play RAM using firewire or such? I'd love to slot another gig of RAM into my powerbook!

It would cost a lot. Think of the cost of an iPod nano - that's the flash memory you're paying for there. A 4 GB iPod costs almost as much as a 30 GB hard disk one. Think how much a 40 GB MacBook would cost if it had only flash memory.
