Folk Band - Album artwork concept
monkey1979 (684 pencils) | Wed, 2009-11-25 23:23This is an experiment for one of my friends folk bands. They haven't recorded anything, but they are mates and asked if I would lend a hand doing some posters/cd covers/flyers for them.
I said I would come up with the concept free, but reconfiguring into all of the other formats would cost. I've quoted under the odds, and shes happy.
The singers supposed to look like shes floating, as she put it, "our music has quite an ethereal feel about it, very organic."
I translated that into this. She is hard not to photograph well.
I have over used photoshop brushes I know, but it was quick work as it's only speculative at the moment.

Like it. She looks very climatic.
But shouldn't this be a square?
yes the finished artwork will be square for the CD covers, I was just trying to get the mood and colour scheme right on this. My photo shop canvas size is about 3 times this size, I just cropped it roughly to give an idea of my intentions. The design is being refined as we speak!

Reminds me of the famous pre-Raphaelite painting, "Ophelia," by Millais. See it here: http://www.tate.org.uk/ophelia/ . Depending on your friend's musical genre, this could work very well for her. Or not. Depends. Nicely rendered, though.

Love the painting, have seen it before somewhere I know. Maybe it was stuck somewhere in the back of my mind when I put this together. I think it fits their music, it's very soft and floaty. Thanks for the comment.

The painting is Millais' interpretation of the dead Ophelia, who is a character in Shakespeare's Othello. She has a famous "mad scene" in which she carries, and delivers lines concerning, a wedding bouquet ("There's rosemary -- that's for remembrance..."), which is the inspiration for the flowers floating around her. Her husband, the Othello of the play's title, strangles her in a jealous rage, believing her to be unfaithful, though she is absolutely not, which makes her the very definition of tragic. That's why I wondered if the resemblance of your work to the painting would be appropriate to this singer's work. If she's an angstfest, cool. If not, well...not.
Thank you for this opportunity to brush off my Theatre degree. I knew it would come in handy someday ;-)

I have just shown your post to my friend, even though the piece wasn't based on Orphelia, she loves it even more now.
Thanks for such an informed post!
You don't tread the boards anymore?

I think your design is too busy. I don't really like you're just fading the flowers, you're not following the form. You're only fading them to make way for the face. Try to make them work with the photo.
Here is an example of how it's done:

I see what you are saying, but I definitely don't want her to look like a cyborg! lol
I am tucking a few leaves (no masks) under her to make it look a little more natural, but overall I like the feel that I have now so won't change it too much. I can only really afford to spend another hour or two on it anyway.
Thanks for the comment Jack

you need to photoshop that long strand of hair away from her face, it looks like your trying to hard to show messy and casual.
With a title like that you are going to need more colours , even if they are subtle, highlighting a leaf here and there would be nice.
Also careful with changing the colour of the photo too much, any lighter and she will look pale and dead! buried under the leaves is NOT what you are going for.
16 billion colours and you choose the one i cant create !??!
Point taken on the colours, I still want it to remain quite autumnal so have a limited pallette, but I can certainly introdue some more.
With regards to the hair, I kind of like it, thought it reflected her quite nicely (she is a bit of a scruffy hippy), I will see what they say, I have about 40 shots to choose from, some with hair a mess some not.

So far so good, but that type needs to stand out more.

The left eye looks like it's bruised. I agree with Leaky about the type...

yeah, at first glance that's what i thought too. i understand you want that kind of scrubby hippy look, but it is kind of distracting. overall, i really like it, but you should consider getting rid of the hair in the face, or at least some of it.
