Font Book

When turning a font off in a collection in Font Book, does that mean it is completely turned off from the system, therefore, saving space? I've installed quite a few fonts recently and now PS CS2 is giving me a "program error" are the two related?

Download linotype font explorer, it will activate and deactivate your fonts, it's free and looks a little like itunes. Also you can check if your fonts are corrupt - which may be your problem.

If a font is turned off it won't save space, but it will save resources, if you have hundreds of fonts activated then your system will slow down dramatically, especially if it is an old Mac it also causes problems too.

As for the error, I am not sure, but if you have loads of fonts in your system folder that certainly won't help. Just have the basic set in there and activate fonts as necessary from a separate fonts folder using fontxplorer.

Try opening photoshop with just the basic fonts and if that doesn't work you will at least know that the problem isn't font related. Do you get the error in other apps too? Also is your software up to date, there have been many updates to cs2 in the last year or so?

I agree, FontBook Sux! It's not made for any more than a few fonts and FE is the BOMB when it comes to font management. You can clean your system fonts folder and leave only the required system fonts -- you don't want your user fonts in there. This saves your computer from having to load all your fonts all the time.

I love linotype. I had a similar issue with fontbook. My mac guy told me, that anything over 500 fonts and font book has an issue.

I also got fontdoctor, which was a fantastic program. It cleaned up all my fonts really well, I have over 3000 activated fonts and probably close to 20k unactivated and ive never had an issue with linotype.

It's also really nice that it has a built in store feature. Easier to buy fonts on the fly!

life is great; without it, you'd be dead.

Physically when u activate a font in Fontbook the font is MOVED to the USER/LIBRARY/FONTS folder and its activated from there. Deactivating it removes it from this folder . . . where it goes is anyones guess. . .I forget actually. . . What I ALWAYS have issues with is the fonts that came with OS X and the ones in my 'Design Fonts' folder, i.e Helvetica, Impact and Optima. I have a better copy of Optima that has a lot more styles. . . so I deactivated it in fontbook and then activated it it in Font Explorer (or suitcase if you like pain lol) that way the system still sees it if any App needs it to run. I DO NOT RECOMMEND you do this will ALL your fonts in Font Book, just the ones that are 'SLIGHTLY' different and you prefer to use.

About your program error: Try setting up a brand new USer account in the Accounts settings in Accounts (call it test with no password) and then log into that user, if the problem exists then boot into safe mode (hold down shift) and try that. If it STILL doesnt work u may have to reinstall. I like to use Cocktail a gr8 utility for troubleshooting. . .

Usually Adobe requires certain files to be in the Library folder (some of them fonts) so if it wokrs under the Test user then you know you might hove to PUT back the fonts into that folder. . . i.e re-install. to be safe.

I've been using this for about 6 months with no issues at all. 100USD well spent.
