Font Editor?

Hey all,
I'm wondering if anyone has experience with creating and editing fonts... I'm finding myself faced with some problems in variable-data printing that could be easily solved with creating my own bitmap fonts. The trick is, for output I have to use .ttf. Is it at all possible to convert between the two?

I'm a complete rookie with fonts, but always look forward to learning a thing or two.

Also: any likes/dislikes/rants/raves as far as software goes? I'm on Mac.
