Forum software
William (188 pencils) | Tue, 2005-10-18 09:49Does any one here have any preference for a particular forum software system?
I will be setting up two forums soon. I am looking for a simple system, that must be secure. I would also like to have a reasonable amount of control over pictures being posted etc.
I would be most comfortable with a PHP/MySQL system although Perl/Python could be used too.
The most secure one I have heard about so far is http://Fudforum.org/ , although it doesn't look the prettiest, and doesn't seem to big selection of skins available.
One of the nicest looking is http://getvanilla.com/ forum, which uses a lot of CSS/XHTML. It looks somewhat like the 37signals homepage. This is a much younger system that feels less tested, so I am hesitant to put it on a very busy forum.
I am not really interested in trying phpBB. I've heard about so many security related problem it is ridiculous. Many hosts now ban it.

We had phpbb for cb and it worked great. I think image upload works really well with it. As for security I'm not sure.
Personally i love the simplicity of vBulletin, which is actually really simple to customise using a touch of CSS. I think it has all the functionality that you require and is very popular at the moment so they must be doing something right.
Failing that I have heard great things of the InvisionBoard suite especially the image gallery but understabd that the BBs are really powerful too.

I've used PHPBB, and although it does have some security bugs, it was never a huge issue to apply the fixes and patches. It's a very active community, so you know it's going to be updated frequently.
The good thing about the smaller ones is hackers don't tend to focus on them as much.
I don't get vBulletin and Invision. They are awesome programs, but why pay for something you can get free? Both are VERY overpriced, IMO.
I've played around with Simple Machines too, less support, less active, but pretty nice.

Sorry about this but I must have been half asleep yesterday ;)
I didn't mean vBulletin at all I meant to recommend punBB which is a super simple BB and is really simple to style with CSS. It's the lightest weight BB I've used but might be too early in it's development cycle for you?
