Free web hosting?
phatcactus (109 points) | Sun, 2006-01-29 17:53Surely somewhere on the internet there is a host with a free no-bullshit hosting plan, right? No banners, no popups, just FTP access to a couple megs of free space in the hopes that as your site grows, you'll upgrade to a paid plan?
I'm making a little site to put a bit of a portfolio on.
And I'd really rather not pay for it. :)
Can anybody recommend anything? I guess I don't mind payin' like, $10/year. But not much more.
Thanks.
$10 I don't know, but you can sign-up for only $39 instead of $119 with this famous promo.
I used this service for a couple years, seemed to be pretty good with cpanel too. It's $11 but only 1 time.
ms11.net
ms11.net < non referral link
but you really should signup with dreamhost because then you help out CB.
But, it's also only for one year.
That's what kills me. I don't mind the $40 so much, especially knowing that some of it'll go to CB, but knowing it'll be $120 next year just makes the whole thing seem silly.
ms11.net looks interesting, but I'd really like a nicer url than that. I'm being picky, yeah. But I'm in no hurry.
Maybe I'll go halvsies with some friends.
Just remember you get what you pay for.
If things start to go belly up on you it is harder to give out to someone when you arent paying them... Just my two cents.

I always wanted to setup a site using something like dreamhost who lets you host as many domains as you want, make it for designers to host portfolios. You wouldn't need more than 25 MBs or so to host a good portfolio in simple html.
too bad Ivan's already running 2 sites and I've got 3 jobs, maybe somebody else wants to take the initiative. 5 people at $2/month and your dreamhost site is paid for.
Have it all tied to a directory of sites, that would be sweet. I already kind of do this and my clients help pay for my hosting.

Never used it myself, but it appears to be what you need. Use your $10-$15 to register a domain name and you will be in business. You may sacrifice speed on a deal like this, but if it is just a portfolio site, you should be safe.
Good luck.

Check out this site. It seems similar to doteasy but this one you dont have to buy a domain name from them, you can use their extension, but i'm sure that you will want your own domain name. Also i read in the FAQ that if you already have a domain name, you can transfer it over to their servers. Also unlimited bandwidth.
cheers
its all about traffic.
there is no such thing as free traffic. traffic costs money because it involves expensive equipment and know-how. if you choose something free or something very cheap that says "unlimited traffic" chances are you'll have problems later. if your portfolio or your blog will have 10,000 hits a day, or everybody will download that cool and funny movie you uploaded there, or will play that cute flash game, they will suspend your account and make you pay for it. furthermore, "free" gets you no guarantee that your website will be 24-7 online, no one will get you any kind of support for it. they practically could cut down your website anytime, without even noticing you in advance.
so i really do believe too, that you get what you pay for.
i really love mediatemple.net and i find their offer hard to beat.
they are among the best hosting providers on the planet and have a reputation for holding design related websites.
disk space: 2GB
total traffic bandwidth: 30GB
5 unique websites (domains) sharing the above space and traffic
5 my-sql databases
e-mails: 1000
sub-domains: 100
24/7 free phone support
cpanel, etc
all this for $191 if you pay 2 years at once.
that 8$/month.
besides the extensive cpanel with urchin stats and user management you get an account center where you can posts trouble tickets or consult an extensive FAQ database. they solved my problems in a matter of hours.
now, sorry if this looks like advertising.
im not related in any way with them.
and im sure you could find something outhere to match their offer.

I use DotYou.com and my web hosting plan costs me $9.75/month. Which to me, isn't that much at all. I also needed something very basic as I wanted to get my website up and running along with my portfolio (however, still pending...Argh!).
My suggestion to you is if you are wanting to upload your portfolio for potential clients and/or employers to see, I would advise something professional, which could ultimately cost you $$$ each month. Not much, but something. Like the others have said, free usually means a lot of crappy advertising banners and pop-ups on YOUR page, plus you would have to use their extension instead of your own (i.e. mydesignbusiness.com). Perfect example is myspace.com. Nothing against them, of course, but I feel for a designer, you would need something a little more professional to get you up and running.
I don't know much about this web hosting stuff, just what I've learned thus far from having my own, but I do know that I would rather pay the few bucks it costs every month to have it be not only my own extension, but my own site. And whenever there are issues with the hosting (which is rare), they have an incredible tech support and it's always fixed within hours, if not minutes. I don't know much about a freebie site, but like Flub-Dub said, I don't imagine there is any tech support for you there.
Good luck!

Hetzner is a webhosting company based in Germany & South Africa.
Here are their comparitive prices : http://hetzner.co.za/index.php?id=305
Their cheapest package comes in at just under $3 a month. If you select their German hosting you should be setup with good service and always on. Their servers are fast and reliable. (I've used them before, and suggest to most of my client with smaller websites to go for this option.) Their 1 year plan costs something like $30 for the whole year.
There used to be some nice no-ads, no frills hosting for free, but those aren't around anymore.
Oh, and so you can understand the pricing - R7 = US$1
