GMail rolling out themes

theme 1

Google has been busy the past few weeks rolling out eye candy for their users. First they launched themes for iGoogle, then video chat for GTalk and now themes for GMail. They look pretty good and there is a good selection of minimalist, high contrast and illustrative themes. They even payed a lot of attention to elaborate footers. See a few more examples below.

OMG! Thses things look so juvenile! But I guess it's the best they can do.

These themes are nice. But as is typical of Google, they only went half-way. Why not make these themes available for ALL Google products? I want my iGoogle homepage, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Reader, Google Docs to match. Would it have been so difficult?

I agree. That would be the best. Plus they should allow me to customize my google theme as I want. Let it be an open platform with strict rules. Let designers create free themes for everybody.

You can already create your own theme for iGoogle. I haven't done it myself, but they offer a "how to guide" somewhere on the iGoogle Theme link. But again, it should go throughout their product line.

A CB theme would probably look very nice!

Agreed, Jim. But as I understand Google design thinking, which sounds stifling scientific, they often take the road of statistical proof of concept.

Nothing wrong with that, provided that focus information is treated as just the beginning of wisdom, not the end of the road in design.

Personally, after seeing the advances in WYSIWYG design achieved on SquareSpace, anything less seems half-hearted at best.

How about that 'Terminal' theme? haha ;)

There's still a few bugs that I find, like not refreshing when I click delete or Mark as Spam etc.
