Gods & Monsters website
JR (18 pencils) | Wed, 2005-09-07 06:49This is a mock-up for a California band called 'Gods & Monsters' I am working on. I'm actually doing a 'making of' article about this on my blog at www.dogmaticblog.com if ya feel like reading more about it. Anyway, here 'tis.

Sorry, can't find anything to criticize. I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing.
.. But I think you should lose the bevel for the title. I feel that the current title looks slightly cheesy because of the effect. I like the red, black and white. Not bad indeed.
Agreed with the above post...I didn't see the bevel until it was mentioned and I viewed the original.

The first (and most important?) thing I saw was Nods and Monsters. It's a nice looking typeface, but that G isn't exactly a legibility superstar. I think it's up to you to decide how important that is.
Other than that, I like the layout a lot!
You need Degas in order to make de VanGogh
fantastic bit of design, great color-scheme, but I read it as Nods and Monsters (which, if they are an 80's head-rocking-type band might be a great name). that's the only thing that I could possibly criticise about it though.
You mean to tell me that's a G?!?! Here I was thinking "Nods and Monsters" was a terribly interesting name...
Oh I think I get it. Lowercase g, right? It's a beautiful font but there's obviously a legibility concern.
P.S. I agree with others, it's pretty much a perfect design aside from the bevel, which stood out to me immediately.
Thanks to all for your comments. So y'all see it as an "n" and not a "G"? Damn. :) I'm gonna have to see if I can get it to look more like a "G" (somehow). I hear ya re: the bevel - but I always felt that using the bevel real slightly/delicately gives a nice effect. The reason I used it for this design was to try and get a wax-stamp look which is kinda puffy and 3-d like.
Anyway, thanks again for your critiques. I've shown the design to the band and they are all pretty happy with it. I had done an alternate design for them in 2003 which I feel is even better than this one. I might post it online for a critique in the future.
Cheers all...

I know what you mean about the bevel, I kinda got just from looking at it that you seemed to be going for something like that, and if you think it works than go for it. It certainly doesn't detract from the design.
For the 'g' you could convert to outlines in Illustrator and just drag the control point over so that it closes the counter of the glyph, for me it was legible but I guess that's because I'm a huge fan of Blackletter typefaces and know that they can be a little funky/old in tradition.
I think you could've used a better designed blackletter typeface though, Lucida Blackletter (the one you used for all the links and headers) is ok but there are definitely more beautiful/well designed faces out there. My opinion though, the g and M in the title of the band are not from that typeface, maybe you should try using that typeface instead?

For me the 'G' looks like a 'G'. But that's little help when the general populace is seeing it as an 'N'. :) When I show the design to people they read it immediately as 'Gods'. Maybe becuase they are seeing it at full-size it makes it easier. Regardless, I am working at refining it somewhat.
I've replaced Lucida Blackletter in the menu - just wasn't happy with it but stuck it in at the time as a guide. The menu still needs work tho. The 'G' and 'M' font (Ardenwood) is just awfully complex to use at a small size such as a menu. (Believe me, I've tried and it is almost illegible at a small size).
As always, thanks for the constructive criticism. Much appreciated.
