The Food and Drug Administration has released graphic new images that tobacco firms must display prominently on cigarette packets to discourage people from smoking. Would they do it for you?
I think it doesn't do any harm, most people are repulsed by it but I think a better solution such as ways to quit should be put on them. This however does not act in the best interest of tax dollars or profits for the companies but I've never understood the angle of killing your customers either. It has slightly reduced the amount of new smokers here in Canada according to reports and it works along side other advertisements that we run against smoking. To add to this we have smoking laws (in Ontario) that prohibit anyone from smoking within a certain distance of a storefront, a bus stop, inside a car with children under the age of 16, and all packaging at a store for cigarettes must be hidden behind a shroud or in a cabinet, just to name a few.
It's just not simply the cool thing it once was in the 50s.
Even as a non smoker, it's ridiculous. Who wants to look at that? There is no one on Earth anymore who doesn't know the dangers of smoking, this is just being incredibly annoying. Why aren't the same graphic labels on cigars, prescription drugs, guns, soda, and everything else unhealthy for you?
But the larger issue is that the government definitely does NOT want you to stop smoking. There's too much tied into it - thousands of jobs in farming, manufacturing and health care, and billions of dollars in taxes. Congress could ban tobacco tomorrow if they really wanted people to be healthy. But they'd rather have it both ways - keep the money coming in while pretending to care.
On the imagery, it's to repel kids, they don't like "gross things". It's harder to market something covered in tar to any age group let alone children.
Here in the UK we have the National Health Service, I'm sure you've heard of this.
A survey was done last year which revealed that smokers cost this government more in hospital bills than the tax dollars they make from cigarettes, so this government really does have an invested interest in banishing the cigarette.
I read recently that following the decline of smokers over the past 40 years, most countries will be virtually cigarette free by 2050. I wish I could remember where I saw the exact figures and breakdown for this, I will post it up if it comes to me.
I smoked for 10 years, gave up ten years ago, I still have the odd cheeky fag with a drink ..
Smokers also die a lot sooner than average, so they don't have 10-20 years of expensive elderly care, surgeries and prescription drugs. That's why a lot of the US is against public health care - not because they hate poor people, but because career politicians and busybodies will use it as justification to get rid of things they don't like. Once smoking is out of the way, alcohol is next, then cola, then fast food.
Stuff like this always reminds me of that Denis Leary rant about smoking...
They could call cigarettes "DEATH IN A BOX" and smokers would still be smoking them. We don't care - heck we'd be flaunting it - chain smoking them two at a time!
What's the deal with the one in the middle... he quit because his hair fell out?!
But seriously, this promotion has to be aimed at different age groups and demographics all for their different reasons (& that's tricky with a few pics on a few packs) but we should concentrate on the littlies and make the world a better place.
i guess if you're stupid enough to generalize, there's no stopping you from saying stupid things like 'If you are stupid enough to smoke, nothing is going to stop you!'

"keep the money coming in while pretending to care." LOVE THAT!

No amount of technology can save a bad idea.

I approve this kind of campaign because cigars are associated with glamour and other "good" things only and people need to know it's just a poison.
one of our brazilian cigar boxes back pictures shows:
"The MinistRy of Health warns: smoke causes sexual impotence"
yes I'm brazilian xD
I doubt it.
Might make me stop designing, but I digress.

I think it has got to a point where people (smokers & non-smokers) don't even bother.

If you can fill out a table, you are now an accountant too.
If you are stupid enough to smoke, nothing is going to stop you!
Well maybe a little hypnosis?

'If you are stupid enough to smoke, nothing is going to stop you!'
I don't think that's a very smart statement.
Many intelligent people smoke.

The packages don't tell anything new - only stating the obvious and what we all know.

Agree. We need something new.
When i was a smoker the packs with the gross images reminded me how much I wanted to quit, and in some way I think they helped me to eventually quit.
same here.
