Golf Course Logo
Anonymous (not verified) | Mon, 2007-11-12 14:47Hey Everyone,
Here is a logo for a golf course that I am designing. The logo for the most part is approved and I am picking colors now and doing final edits. However, I need help/advice with the fine tuning, I still feel something might be off. I really am looking for any suggestion with the mark above that could make it better/stronger. Or if you have any advice on the type (size, wieght, etc.) I will gladly take that as well. Thanks in advance.

Not bad!
It does look like the text isn't lined up centered with the icon. Might be an optical illusion though. I'd make 'golf course at...' a little smaller compared to the logotype.
Glad you did this in b/w first. Are you going color down the road?

I will double check how centered it is. My only fear with going smaller with "golf course" is that it will disappear at a smaller size. Which I have seen happen before.
I am are going through color explorations now and I think there is going to be multiple ones due to the fact that it will be placed on a number of different colored apparel (shirts, hats etc.) But they are all pretty muted colors so far.
Point taken on the size, and normally I harp on this, but for a favicon you have your icon already established so it's very obvious what this logo is for, even at small sizes.
Your next step could be to center the items (Align is your friend in illustrator!) and then copy and paste the logo to different sizes: 16px for favicon (web) on up to 500 or 600 px for a good spread.

I just went back and checked my file and turns out that it is centered on the type.
Curious. What fonts are those, they're very nice!
Trajan and futura
The only thing is see is that the shading on the golfball sugests a different style than the rest of logo being that it's light gray. What happens if the shading there is solid black (or whatever color you choose) instead of a tint?
Other than that it looks really nice, I can easily picture this embroidered on a nice golf shirt. Good job!
If I can get away with it I am going to leave it as a light/warm gray (depending on the final colors). But I will test it out and see how it fairs in just black.
I actually really like this.
The gray comment that SuziQ mentioned came to my mind too. Usually you want something that can work completely in black and white, not grayscale.
My only other comment would be to lengthen the "V" shape, so it extends through the B's further. I don't think that is a good way to explain it, so if you don't mind, I illustrated what I mean.
Hope that helps, I think the font choices are excellent. I'm a big fan of Trajan or similar. :)

Trajan rocks. I used it for dvd packaging all the time.

Thanks for your comment, thats something I have been struggling with is how to end the top of the B. I was thinking of doing what you did or just completely cut it off. The only thing I am wondering with what you did was whether or not it hurts the shape because the stroke goes much thinner than anywhere else within the mark. What do you think?
Nah, you're dealing with the small numbers as well - I think it will be fine to have the smaller stroke. :)

I really like!, I totally agree that you should extend the "V" shape, it totally does worlds to the logo!

I think it's a smashing logo, really. I love Seraphim's suggestion about the B's,, though, and I think the shadow on the golf ball's dimples are subtle enough that you good go 100% K with them. The grayscale drops out way too much.
Maybe this is a cliché by now, but what about tracking "Golf Course at Schenley Park" so its margins are the same as "Bob O'Connor"?

I have thought about what to do with the type under "Bob O'Connor" and the client wants to shorten it so i have to wait to see before I change anything. I also kinda like how it tapers in because it makes the overall shape flow better. Did you get that it spells out Bob?
While I like the typeface and the mark you've created, I can't help but see angry owl eyes. Kind of looks like eyeballs within the counters of the B, and the V shape creates eyebrows. It must be just me.
I do like how you interconnected the shapes.
