sad, really. the whole "we'll pay you in exposure" stuff is so low rent in general. it's particularly sad to see a huge company act like they can't afford to pay for design work.

It isn't clear to me if these artists worked on spec, expecting to be paid, only to find out the deal was "quid pro animadverto." Nevertheless, this doesn't show Google in a good light.

i believe google is contacting them and asking them to create work for them with compensation being purely exposure.
i.e., they're asking people to do designs for them for free.
Well, they can say no. Then Google thinks about it and offers money. That's called negotiating. But really, Google is being very naive if they think they'll get good work -- and, perhaps more importantly, good press -- by handling this as they are doing.

i think they did say no. and then they made sure people knew that google was asking them to work for them for free.
i just hate the whole concept of "exposure" as "compensation." 99% of the time it's bullshit. few things are prestigious enough to make that worthwhile. and if i want to do things for free, i'd prefer to support a cause rather than one of the more successful companies in the world at the moment.
Google doesn't want to pay for anything except software development. That's why their top two Interaction Designers just left for Twitter and elsewhere.
A current employee told my Design group that there's 10 designers for every 800 devs at Google.
To be fair I don't think Firefox (Mozilla) pays devs or designers to create Add-ons or Themes either.

OOooh free exposure. Goodie. Then they can get more work from people who will lowball them or wants stuff free. 1z0-052
Always find it funny that people always want something done because they can't do it, but then don't value it enough to ante up and pay.
