Graphic Design book recommendations!
jHouse (1420 points) | Wed, 2008-10-01 09:19Hi guys -
I'm moving in to my new office soon - so I thought why not buy some nice design books to shove in there? I've got a few Rockport ones and they're pretty good so I went on Amazon to see what else I could find.
1) Nato is gonna love this - "Logo" - Michael Evamy
Every logo imaginable. Black and white of course. Really good for inspiration - or just for copying! :) The paper wrap comes off the book and makes a really nice poster:

2) "Materials, Process, Print" - Daniel Mason
A fantastic book for all us print guys. Displays hundreds of neat finishes, materials and packaging designs.

3) "How to be a graphic designer without losing your soul" - Adrian Shaughnessy
The first design book I ever read. Really good if you want to start your own company, go freelance or just get paid.

4) "1000 Graphic Elements" - Wilson Harvey
Fantastic book. Invaluable inspiration. Highly recommended.

5) "1000 Type Treatments" - Wilson Harvey
This guy must have made a mint from these two books. Again - fantastic. Shows 1000 type treatments...I think.

Can easily spend hours in Waterstones browsing the design/photography section. Here are couple that come to mind:
100 habits of successful graphic designers, published by Rockport.
Looks at various projects and the rational behind the results.

Los Logos, Dos Logos, Tres Logos series, published by the superb Die-Gestalten Verlag
An absolute must for any logo junkies out there, this series is addictive.

Epica advertising awards series, published by Ava
Cross media creative advertising inspiration.

Creative Advertising, published by Thames & Hudson
More creative advertising inspiration:

To name just a couple!
Wow that first one one looks nice.
Might have to have a look at that ;)
Cheers

Thanks for posting these. I also collect graphic design books and I think I may have to purchase your first suggestion. I love the idea of all the logos being in black & white. Usually at the published stage, they're in color. Very nice.

"The name's Bond, James Bond."

Yea - that book is my favourite :)
Actually there are a few in colour - but in a collage at the beginning of a section...very nice.
