I am giving a creativity course to university undergraduates here in Mexico. I would like help in gathering ideas as to what are the basic bases, reasons, motivations for generating and providing very good creativity in design projects.

Not only start with ALL aspects of typography, but the history, as well. In order to be successful at design, it's imperative to learn how it got here first.

This is an excellent book for just that:

A History of Graphic Design by Philip B. Meggs.

It's like our bible.

We used it for our History of Graphic Design class in college, and I never sold it back, it was so resourceful. We have always been taught—and I agree 100%—that in order to succeed in design, you should know the history of its origin first.

I'm sure there are those that can get away with it (ala Stefan Sagmeister) that never went to college to study design and are just damn talented.

I unfortunately, am not one of those designers—hence, the degree. :(

Immerse yourself in the subject. Look within to find the creative solution.

Everyone will have their own methods and their own opinion on how good design is generated. My inspiration has always come from my immediate environment and from tapping into a base instinct that we're all born with -- the imagination.

The one thing that I have learned over the years, is that great creativity should never be forced. Ingest the problem at hand, and if an idea comes to you right away, perfect, run with it. If it doesn't, then take a step back, remember to breathe, and turn your attention to an unrelated activity. I've always found that when I release myself from the dragon's claws of anxiety I usually arrive at a solution. Just don't hurt yourself falling out of the shower when the idea appears!

In closing, I'd like to impart the great words of jazz musician and composer, Benny Golson:

"Creative people are committed to risk. The creative person always walks two steps into the darkness. Everybody can see what's in the light. They can imitate it, they can underscore it, they can modify it, they can reshape it. But the real heroes delve in darkness of the unknown."
