graphicstyle logo
graphicstyle (6 pencils) | Thu, 2007-08-16 05:51This is the development of my graphics label and logo. Its nothing official because I'm still a student but I thought it would be fun to have my own label. At first it was graphiCStyl3 marking the release of Adobe CS3 (Thats how I thought of the name) but it soon got old and all of my friends pronounced it with the 3 at the end. That brought out the newest one on the bottom, where I have used an e and developed a logo.
I would love to hear what you all think of them. What you like and don't like about them and how I can improve.

I think you should start by dropping the backgrounds on all three. If they are meant to be part of the logo, the logo will be difficult to incorporate into different media. Otherwise they are just distracting. I think the 3rd one is your strongest. It has a clean typeface and the upside down E is playful. I think the 2.0 will suggest that it's a software company so maybe leave that out.

I'm sorry, but I think you need to start over by opening up a plain black or white canvas and doing it with just black and white. No greyscale, no gradients. I think I would agree with Oliiesan, and say that number 3 is your strongest logo idea - but what is with the 2.0? Do you only design in web 2.0? The upside-down "E" kind of looks like an "o" to me, as well.
I just think you're trying to buy the cart before the horse on these - trying to design a background and colour scheme before you actually have a logo design. Start with sketches, come up with several pages of ideas, and work from there.

Perfectly Lost Designs
Yes, sketching is always a great way to get a bunch of ideas out there. And the more you generate the more they will spark new ideas. Even if an idea seems silly, put it on paper, it might be the seed of something great.

You're a student so the first thing you should learn about logos is that they need to process well in B&W. Do you really think if you faxed or photocopied your stationary someone would be able to ready your logo? Not with the 1st or 2nd.
As for the 3rd, it's clean, modern, mature (mature as in experienced, not outdated) and works well.
I just don't like the 2.0. As in a second version as in a work in progress as in not yet perfect. Unless I read it wrong, logos should not have a "version" number in them.
Otherwise, you're doing great. Nice job!
Best,
Nadia
I wonder about the use of "the peak of graphic design" in your second rendering. That's such a finite concept for a company focused on Web 2.0, if indeed that is your focus.
Of the three presentations, I prefer the 3rd, but only if it were rendered without the background and in solid B/W.
None of these logos works for me as a logo for the reasons already stated so well by others, most recently Nadia. Further, if your focus is really Web 2.0, I would expect to see some interconnectivity, some "two-wayness" (if that's not a word yet, I'm sure it soon will be) to reflect that dynamic. Given that, you might think I'd like your #1, but I'm afraid I don't. There's nothing to me very forward-thinking and truly interactive about mirror images. If anything, Web 2.0 should be breaking through that concept!

Love the top one! Of course to repeat seraphim's point, definitely start in b/w and just with the logo. You won't always have the benefit of the sweet blend when you produce this logo for web, at really small sizes or at really large sizes. You'll fight banding every time.
I hate the backwards '3' for the e. That's just me. :) Respect the font.

Thanks to all of you for commenting...
Just to clear up a few things.
This is not official and these were made as "mock ups". If I were to be making a logo I would indeed do them in black and white and no backgrounds. The backgrounds are just what I thought looked good with them at the time. As for the 2.0 thing, thats just marking the fact that I got rid of the 3 at the end and tried something new (sorry for confusion) and I will leave it out in the future. I will take your advice and I'm going to start sketching a lot more.
Thanks again
