Groundwork Website
monkey1979 (684 points) | Mon, 2010-02-15 22:23Hi All
You might remember this logo from about a month ago. I am working on the website now. This is the best of three roughs so far.
I am yet to get a proper briefing, but had a few hours to spare so thought I would come up with some ideas.
Web isn't my forté, so I usually sub out psd -> css conversion just to make a template for myself to work from. But my css guy has been letting me down lately.
Anyone here offer similar services? All I need are templates knocking up from my mock-ups. For example, what would you charge to code this page of the website? (templates, I usually have three alternate layouts, just styled up in CSS from a well organised PSD)
Following your advice I have tried to open this website up a bit, add more white space. The top banner will have a flash animation, nothing fancy or overblown, slow transitions.
All critique will be well received.

Like it. A little light on the left and not sure about flush right text - is it that way throughout the site? The descriptive text blocks are getting a tad long as well - have you tried breaking the left side flush with the top banner? Then you could put ads or announcements or google ads under the logo. Also - what's with "solutions" in the logo? Is it supposed to hang from "Groundwrk & Landscaping"? Looks odd to me.
But the main problem imho... what's with the greeking? You're a quark guy, right? Don't you have the Klingon greeking plug-in?
Haha, I did used to have the klingon Jabber plugin for quark, must dig that out again!
I agree with the comments about the left hand side being light, I am reworking it now, and also have changed all of the text so that it is flush left and am working on the balance. I'll post a new crit when I am done.
With regards to the Google Ads, what would be the purpose of these? Surely they would only advertise your competition, I have never used them so could be wrong.

hum, logo + banner solution is boring, you can explore the space =]
I expected something like gardening that is put the things on their right places
and your actual layout is a grid mess...
you need more "architectural" grid like this:

you can put a banner if you want but I think you need more "zen" feeling...
that right picture could be alternating flash (3 or 4 with indicator below)
at bottom you could put a line illustration with some wide garden

Well done! This layout breathes much better. You're so very close to a golden proportion on the three columns. Somehow, I think you were going there.

Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
yes that proportions really make difference. I just used visual comfort sense and wanted a wider garden picture to make it alternating flash. one more day on it aligning all elements will make it fine. I'm working with drupal but very insatisfied with themes, I'll need to create my own themes =]

@querty, you are right, much better. Think I'll just lift that design as one of the options I show to my client on Saturday. If you don't mind.. :))
I will post a pic of the cleaned up / aligned version soon.

double posting

keep walking =] the first cruel thing is find the content. it's good to find "green" themes to add like icons and other stuff from institutions that your client had compromised. Nothing more is needed no tips and tricks stuffs. You could add lined sketch as watermark. good luck!

I think it will work better centered on browser window.

Opps! That wouldn't work so well would it. My bad.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
Sweet. God is that ever nice.
