GS Landsacpe Construction
Mitch (134 pencils) | Wed, 2006-01-11 17:04Would really appreciate a critical look over this direction for a local landscape gardener.
Background
Company:
Local landscape gardener. (very small company, 2 persons in employment)
The client requested that we investigated a less corporate route (ie he wants to be perceived as a craftsman, not a big company)
Services provided:
GS Landscape Construction offer a fairly complete landscape service. (includes design, construction (including structural, ie, pergodas, water features, paving etc), planting, garden styling, and maintenance)
Demographics:
Middle class, fairly wealthy home owners in an affluent area of Surrey. Generally prefer quality over cost, and take great pride in the appearance of their possessions.
Direction
Logo:
I want to suggest a quality/traditional/gardening heritage feel (via flourishes and ligatures) while keeping it contemporary (via efficient and clean & crisp vector styling) yet not clinical so that it does not lose it's 'organic' feel.
Hopefully this will give the impression of a gardener with heritage and subtle execution of design while keeping it relaxed/friendly/personal/approachable.
Rest of ID:
I am playing around with the idea of expanding the “flourish” (maybe could incorporate the defining aspects of his finished gardens - which come across as naturally beautiful) as a supporting element of the ID, this could work as a visual design aid for stationery and marketing that will furthermore describe the subtle natural beauty of his gardening work.
Nb. I have only included a final sketch, before we develop it in vector format. This is as I didn’t want to be guided through a process, just really want critical observations on the concept, form and function of this one direction.
Many thanks for you time.
Mitch

I do like the overall composition, and it´s easy to image how will it come out...., I think it´s a good idea to connect letters with these ligatures and flourishes...but I´m not sure they are well implemented, in both cases..., the one in the "L"...and the "S" and "T" connection...I feel the y can work beautifully if it used properly...maybe instead of going right up.., go down and then go up as passing under the others letters...mmm....work it out and it´ll will turn out great..
Nice to see a sketch! I wish everybody would start with a sketch before jumping to Illustrator.
Your strategy is right, but I think you can do something more interesting. If you want to do the vines do it somehow more intense. Or do something else. The L turning into a vine looks a bit forced.
