Hand-done Typography Work, any reference or resource?
zagadka (131 points) | Mon, 2007-12-03 17:55Hi all,
I got very interested in hand-done-typography and started doing a few thing on my own. But was wondering if there is any good references or resources. I would like to know more about how traditional types were designed, what kind of metrics or methods were used, as well as examples on how people are pushing the limits.
I got a few books on hand-written typography:
Hand Job: A Catalog of Type by Michael Perry
Fingerprint: The Art of Using Handmade Elements in Graphic Design by Michael Mabry
and a few books on Sagmeister.
I guess what I want is resources on more traditional type design.
Any recommendations?

Ya gotta check out Doyald Young. Awesome LA-based type designer. Old school, but in the best way possible.

Thanks natobasso. That guy, Donald Young, I liked from the beginning, I mean his home page. So simple and powerful.
Oh yeah. I've had the priveledge of hearing him speak in person (AIGA Conference San Diego and at a regular meeting as well) and he's so down to earth and sharp. He uses digital tools, but really is a proponent for starting the old fashioned way.
You can tell by his fonts he's a master of detail!
