Hane, reproductive services
aroberts (262 pencils) | Thu, 2009-12-03 13:09Heeeeey. So I've been working on my final project for my design course and wanted to get some opinions on the overall success. The perimeters of the logo design was this:
There were 7 names we could choose from in creating the name of our business, they are all names of animals from different languages. I chose, Hane, which is Norwegian for Rooster. Then we brainstormed the business industry. I thought rooster>cock>sperm>sperm bank, I think it also works because of the general role of a rooster on the farm. And here's a rough brief of what I came up with:
Hane offers an exclusive list of sperm bank donors and is a leading innovator in reproductive services. With an emphasis on donor consultation, Hane offers unique solutions to choosing a donor while still maintaining the donor's anonymity.
I've included some initial comps, alterations of the final concept, and the final concept itself, thanks!

I like the logo, but I think it's a bit obvious. You could be happy with it, specially compared to some of the other logos shown here, but I think it could have been done better. Specially, if this is your final project, I think, whilst the logo is good, the process is weak. For school, often the process is even more important then the result.
Your process doesn't show very much variation. Actually, they're only two concepts, the rest are variations.
Maybe you did more sketches, I don't know, but I'm judging at what you're showing me.
You're saying this is the final concept itself so I don't know if any suggestion will have any effect. I would like to see an incorporation of the colour red, which is iconic for roosters I think. And a bit more variations, rather then 'sperm' and 'roostertail'.
ps; when showcasing a logo, don't put it in a corner like you did now ;-)

thanks for the comments! these are only the tailored process, alot of my stuff is through sketches. Also, it's black because I didn't want anyone looking at the color- let's focus on the design though right now I have it in a pale green for Hane and a dark warm gray for "reproductive services".
I'm still developing the final project so there's room to work on it!
Oh my hell!
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
"rooster>cock>sperm>sperm bank"
I don't even know where to begin with that thought process!

I would stay away from the obvious sperm shape in this one. I've done up three logos for companies dealing in swine genetics and I've yet to put any swimmers into the logo. However, I was asked to put some screened in the background of an ad...
It's for school...go the limit, man! If you want to get very graphic I would suggest concentrating on the rooster or cock idea. ie comb of the rooster...also looks like "the lads" that usually hang with Dick...lol...your thought process is unique.
Or more subtle aspects of the industry and creature. ie feather (that might be misconstrued as kinky but hell....it is for school!)

I agree, rock the cock!
Btw, it's ok if the logo ends up looking phallic.

you could 'borrow' a slogan and really go for it,
"GOT COCK?"
16 billion colours and you choose the one i cant create !??!
Or another slogan:
We give the best Hane jobs.

That really looks more like a tadpole to me than sperm. I agree it's a little too, well, in-yer-face. Oh God, are we really going there? No. Absolutely not.
I'mm thinking about this as an opportunity for you to "sell the sizzle, not the steak," in the sense of stressing why people go to fertility clinics in the first place: to get help conceiving a child. Maybe that's where to start, rather than with the mechanics.
All of that said, I think the idea of using a sperm as the open space in the letter A is clever. not brilliantly original, mind you, but clever. Oh, not that I see sperm in As everywhere I look that way some people around here see penises ;-) but using white space in As and Os and whatnot to reverse out some kind of icon is a staple in the design biz.

Haha, I just came up with the perfect logo after reading that!

LOL, you guys are too funny! Yeah it's school, so I definitely took a more original route in my brainstorming process and I initially was a little shy to "go there" but after seeing this logo:

I thought "hell if they can use it...." and it beats to "abstracted people" logos I kept seeing everywhere.
Oh and to keep the jokes coming, (pun intended?) here's a little alteration on the fly:

Do it. Hand it in. I dare you!

I see a lot of possibilities for "alterations" on this logo. ;-)
Here's the thing. It's a decent logo - I'd agree basically with Mara's "clever" assessment more or less (and the tadpole angle too). But there's a caveat here as well. If your portfolio is full of outstanding work and you don't mind doing a throwaway project - go the... ahem... "in your face" route. You'll probably get a decent grade on this. But if you want something you can use to get a job after you graduate - it would really show your potential as a designer to take a business model like this and create a logo that works on a higher level.
As always... jmho.
I agree, the in your face route would be more refreshing and you could really go to town on it.
If you need...ahem...reference links...holler at me ;)
