Hard drive Issues

Hello from Cleveland

I have an old G4 its a 400 with a new 1.2hrtz chip on it 1 GIG of ram.
I have Updated it 2 new hard drives a 80G and a 160G. The 160 is reading only 120G I have installed my system on the 160G and after the update to 10.4.7 I am getting a kernel panic in odd situations. Fire fox booting, adobe booting or installing anything. How can I tell if the drive is bad. Has anyone had the same issue and any idea how to fix it. I cant tell if its the OS or my system.

Thanks James

Hi jstiddy,
the problem probably comes from the 10.4.7 installation. You have to download the combo version of update OSX, every time you do an upgrade. Dont forget that. Although you can check your drive using an application such as TechTool Pro for any Hard disk drive problems. I'm afraid that you have to do a new installation of Mac OSX on your machine.

The drive isn't bad, your G4 only supports drives that are under 128 GB. You ought to get a ATA/100 card and hook the drives up to that, and you'll be fine. Note that you have to reformat the drive to get it back to full capacity once you put it on the card.
