Has anybody ever had this problem from their Mac's speakers???
onegirlcreative (1092 points) | Thu, 2008-03-27 14:26OK, this is really weird, and before I call Apple Support, I thought I'd just ask around to see if this has happened to anybody else.
As some of you may know, I recently purchased a brand new Intel iMac 24" at Apple in December. Since then (albeit only 3 months), it has been running beautifully. I couldn't be happier.
However, a few days ago, there was this obnoxious beeping noise—it literally sounded like one of our fire alarms was broken. We couldn't find the source. Then when I turned my computer off, it went away.
This morning, it started up again—that obnoxious, annoying beeping sound. Well, it seems the source is from my computer's speakers. I thought it was my soundsticks—because they're pretty old, but even when I when to system preferences and clicked internal speakers instead of USB, the beeping came from my Mac's speakers this time instead. Which obviously tells me, it's something with my computer and/or speakers.
WTF???
Has this happened to anybody here? If so, please tell me it's just a simple fix and nothing major. I mean, this thing is brand new, and although it is still under warranty (thank God), I wanted to check around beforehand.
I hope somebody has a simple answer and it's nothing serious.
Thanks guys!
Suzanne

It could be a warning from the motherboard? Have you tried repairing permissions first off? Sorry you are having this issue; sounds weird!

Bad RAM will cause three beeps on start up:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5989223
By the way, do you have your cell phone next to your computer? The comp will pick up the cell phone signal and give you weird noises through your speakers, sometimes very 'beep' like noises...
Restart by holding your D key and you will be taken to a hardware test start up screen. Test your RAM for errors there.

It seems to be very random. So far, it has only happened twice—two days ago and this morning, and then it stopped. It's weird.
Yes, I do keep my cell phone right next to my computer. If it happens again, I will do as you suggest and see if that's the problem.
I also posted a reply to that thread you sent me from Apple Discussions, so I'm hoping somebody can figure this out. I really really hope it isn't a HD issue. That would suck.
Also, I didn't buy this in December, I bought it in January. So I have had this thing 2 months and already it's beeping at me??? Neat.
Thanks for replying though.

I'd still recommend restarting while holding the D key; at least you can elimate your RAM or other hardware as the culprit. I'm here ta help ya Suzanne!

OK, I will do that then. I will restart in a bit or just do it tonight before I go to bed. Too much work!!! Ugh!
Thanks for the suggestion. As always, I'm VERY appreciative.
P.S. Thanks for posting on my myspace page. I love it!!! I actually have "friends" other than hard-to-reach celebrities. It's kind of an ongoing joke. LOL

I just got off the phone with Apple Tech Support and he had me force quit out of my running apps, and relaunch my Finder. As soon as I was doing that, the beeping stopped.
It had started up again so I wanted to call Apple while it was beeping so he could hear it.
Anyway, he thinks it's from MySpace. Hmmm....I have MySpace open now and of course, it isn't doing anything. But we're thinking it's something from Safari. One of those websites. Well, every time it happens, I have MySpace open.
He gave me a case# so if it happens again, I can call them to see where to go from there. Figures it stopped so we can't figure it out.
Repair permissions, perhaps???

I'd repair permissions. I'd also ditch Safari and download Firefox. :)
I'll bet you anything there's an ad on that myspace page of yours that's trying to 'get your attention' with the annoying beep.

I already have Firefox, and I hate it!!! The ONLY time I use it is when I'm working on my website and I want to check both browsers to ensure compatibility, etc. and when I'm listing something on eBay. Otherwise, I hate it!!!
I am going to repair permissions and see what happens.

I will try that right now.
It seems the beeping only starts whenever I'm editing my MySpace profile. Weird, huh? As soon as I exit out, it stops. Hmmm....

Next time you're on that page make a note of what ads are there. I'll bet you $10 that one of those ads is making the noise.

If you're so certain, then how about increasing that wager??? LOL
Just kidding.
I seriously bet you're right, because it doesn't happen every time I'm on MySpace, but it seems to happen ONLY when I'm on MySpace. Sucks!

There are ads out there (shock!) that use these tactics to get attention.

Sadly.
I am going to make a note of what ads are displayed when the beeping starts.
How is it these ads are trying to beep at you? How on earth would that make me want to look at the ad if my computer is beeping? If anything—like what I did—I wanted to find out where the source of the beeping came from, not looking on my computer screen.
Weird.

mute button
I like listening to my iTunes while I'm on the computer, and the mute button isn't very convenient. Now that I know what the source is however, I will mute it when/if I need to update/edit my profile or use my MySpace page.

I'm only now getting in on this converse!
I've had MANY users ask me 'what's that funny noise that keeps happening?" I say "what funny noise?" they then ask me to listen to their computer. Sometimes its a beep, sometimes it s a strange tinkling and plopping sound. . . sometimes its just indescribable! LOL But it drives me nuts cause I go all through the sound prefs and quit app after app, go into the terminal and type 'top' to see what HIDDEN process might be running to cause these weird noises until I finally learned. . .
ITS A STUPID BANNER NO BIGGER THAN 10x10 pxs on a web page that is just using sound in its LAME ANIMATION!!!!
bleh. . . sorry. . . but that's my experience. . . its usually a ad web banner that loads SOMETIMES on the pages you visit. . . you don't see it but like the darn cricket in the house. . . the SOUND DRIVES YOU NUTS!!
:)

And it must be an ad banner that shows up on MySpace, because every time it has happened, it's while I am on my MySpace page, or any other, for that matter.
I guess Nat, you were right!!!
I repaired permissions, so hopefully that'll help, too.
OH, and this particular banner—whichever one it is, it's just a beeping noise, probably every 3 seconds. It doesn't change, just a beep—similar to a sound that you would probably hear from your fire alarm warning you that you need to change the batteries. That kind of beep.

Another thought.. do you keep your cell phone by your computer? the signal can sometimes interfere with your speakers causing strange noises.. just a thought.
Yall need to read the entire thread before posting. :)

I personally don't use iTunes. iPod or stereo works for me. I figure with all the program extensions going on, why add more to the mix? Plus the stereo's got a kick-ass speaker system.
Those noisy banner ads, unfortunately, are probably going to become a lot more prevalent and more adept when dealing with any blocks you erect. Do you really want to have to keep refurbishing your operating system? Either mute the sound when you go to those sites that allow these annoying ads, or avoid all together.

I always mute it (temporarily) whenever those annoying web ads pop up. But of course, they are temporary.
AS far as using iTunes, I have kick-ass speakers on my computer—I have the Karman-Harden Soundsticks and they are the best, and I don't have a home stereo system. This is it.
The whole point of this thread was to figure out where the beeping was coming from, not to try and figure out how to avoid it. I thought it was something that was coming from my computer, therefore causing problems to either my motherboard or speakers, or wherever. Now that I know it's just an annoying banner ad, I am not worried about it any longer.
Thanks for your input.

This thead is spam. It's all about you and nato flirting again. It is so obvious that this question was for nato to answer. Keep this crap off CB and go to myspace to flirt. Everyone experiences these annoying sounds and deals with them without freaking out.
Just a friendly suggestion, kiss, kiss.
