HD problem
sidesey (280 pencils) | Thu, 2007-02-22 16:50Hi all,
I have an external lacie triple interface HD that is trying to read or write data, even though my mac and it had been shut down. I can't mount the drive and lacie's website doesn't really help with this.
I could try connecting it using usb or to another mac, but don't want to switch it off and potentially lose all the data on it unless i have to.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks hopefully
Andy

Had some advice from someone to turn it off along with mac and leave for 20 minutes, so thats what i am going to do. Will update if not fixed.
I tried turning it off, and also tried a different power cable and no luck, does this mean the HD is useless now? Any ideas much appreciated.
Thanks
looks like its fried, warning to you all don't just back up to a HD back up to two or three...!
2)Do you have the option to remove the drive from the enclosure and insert it in another enclosure or into a machine?
3)It could be the controller that is causing it to behave erratically as a drive wouldn't continue to read/write unless it was being told to do so.
4)have you tried attaching it to another machine?

1. Can't see the drive in disk utiltiy, no.
2. if i remove it from the enclosure then that voids the warranty, there is a little sticker over the opening, and as it is only a few months old I dont want to do that.
3. Maybe, yes
4. Yes, same problem
Thanks for trying Plugz.
Oddly enough I recently bought a cheap 2nd external HDD as a "just in case" backup and I think my old one is about to die as it started making some very nasty noises.
I think what I might do is just order a 1TB MyBook HDD and an Airport Extreme and run it as a network drive with an auto overnight backup on to it so even if my main external drive taps out I've got that redundant drive which can backup all of my machines...

Like your thinking. how much will that set you back though. I presume that you would backup in another way too just in case!
Airport Extreme is £179, an external 1TB MyBook HDD is £309 or I could get 2 x 500GB for £118 each and set it up as a wireless RAID system.
It'll be about £500 (USD$900) but I can claim all of that as a business expense so it doesn't worry me too much to be honest.
I've already got a 320GB HDD connected that runs backups weekly and a 160GB drive that I manually do a backup to once every few months so that incase of fire or flood I've got something recoverable somewhere.
I hope...
